Dog Skid plate

Hi a friend went hunting with me , for several days in N.Dakota. Every day he put a skid plate protector on his Lab. I never have used one. Near the end of the trip my Lab ran thru a down barbed wire fence, and got tripped running full speed. She cut open her chest, which i didnt find til later in the day. My friend carries a needed, and stiching thread with him, and he cleaned her up, and put in the stiches.( That is why he used a skid plate, and carries needle and thread). Which saved a late night trip to a vet. He offered to buy me a skid plate , which immediately i said i didnt need. A minute later i realized , MY DOG needs one!.
He gave me a gift skid plate, but my question is , in her arm pit, it has rubbed off the hair, and inflammed the skin. It is centered and even, did i get a size too big, that is too wide across the chest? Should i get a smaller size, or cut some of the material away from the area around the arm pit?

I occasionally put them on my Cockers, and I've never had the problem you're talking about. Of course, the strip down the chest does not come into contact with their legs on either side, so maybe yours is too large?

Most likely to large. I have some here I got in a auction grab bag. What size are you looking for. These would be cheap. They don't fit my springers. Well, one fit Odie but he's 50+ Lbs. I like to use the Neoprene ones. They work a bit better as far as protecting more of the dog. And they do the job on barbed wire too. The vest gets chewed up from it though in time. I have one that has several scratches and ya think "man" that is how many times Lady bug would have been gashed". Springers are terrible, They go back and fourth through that fence trailing birds allot, instead of running down a fence. And Neo has saved me mostly. None can protect "all" the dog. But most times it is breast, belly, or upper front leg that gets it.

I'd also guess "too large." I've never had this issue with skid plates or other chest/belly protectors but have with neoprene vests. Around the leg openings on these I would stitch a heavy fleece "cover." That ended the problem (I used a piece of theraputic fabric as used on horse saddle blankets. Good luck. Oh, and a staple-installer is far easier than sutures; I carry both, plus steri-strip adhesive suture packs. I also carry a razor & disinfectant swabs & pads for prepping injury areas. Good luck.

You can try a different size, but that has been the knock on those type of chest protectors is the abrasion under the arms. Although dogs with thicker hair under there seem to be less bothered.
