Fleas!

A friend was nice enough to watch our pup while we were away, but unfortunately she came home with fleas. :mad: We washed everything, and picked up some BioSpot shampoo and when she was finally dry, we hit her with Advantix (since we found a few stragglers after the bath).

That was about 2 weeks ago, and today I see a few more of those buggers on her! More laundry, another bath of BioSpot, and a pill of Capstar (friend offered this, said it helps their dog). Anybody have more tips/tricks to make sure these suckers dont' come back? We're in a condo with carpet, so I've been vacumming like a mad man. I picked up one of those powders, but it sounds so damn toxic, and we don't have the best ventilation. I work from home, and I can't leave here somewhere else for extended period of time â??*Don't want to make us all sick. Any help is appreciated. thanks.
 
Use Frontline or something like that, that usually helps pretty good. Also, I wash my dogs with Dawn liquid diswashing soap, it kills those pesky suckers on contact. It does dry out the dog a bit so I wash them with a good moisturizing dog shampoo after. I also give my dogs a little bacon grease, it really helps with the shine of their coats! Good luck ridding the animals of those pesky bugs!
 
thanks for the tip. I read about dish soap killing them, but didn't even think about using it to wash her. I was dunking the flea comb in a bowl of dish soap and water when I was picking the leftover bugs off her the first time around. I'll have to try bathing her in it next time. (fingers crossed there is no next time)

At least one good thing about white fur in the house â?? you can SEE those suckers! I feel bad for anybody who's got a black lab with fleas.
 
You are right to be cautious about the toxins. Sometimes they do more harm than good. Try sprinkling borax in the carpet and vacuuming it up after awhile. While it isn't completely safe its far safer than a lot of others and quite effective.

Keep at it until those little suckers quit hatching.

thanks. going to try the borax just to be safe. I scrubbed her down again yesterday with the flea shampoo from biospot (mainly cuz she rubbed herself in some shhh at the park). Didn't notice any of those buggers fleeing for their life (no pun intended), so I'm feeling a bit more confident we got it. fingers crossed tho.
 
I would be careful giving my dog Bacon Grease. I am a fussy person and know how bacon is cured and smoked. I don't give Bacon to my dog for I don't think all that SALT is good for them at all. True dogs do need some salt, but the amount put in Bacon Brine Cure is way to much for their system. Think about it........Bob
 
A coworkers vet told them to put a cheap flea collar in their vacuum canister or bag as well. That way when you vacuum you'll kill whatever you pick up.
 
whenever i hear my parents say they got fleas in their house.. its all over the house.. their shitz tu (or whatever the spelling is) picks them off from the cats outside. i know how tough it is to get rid of them. my mother would always do what you are doing, put flea stuff on the dog and vaccumm.. she does do this.. when my dad goes to work, my mother doesnt work so she will take the dog out, put all the dishes away and put in 4 bug stink bombs in and it does usually do the trick but have to stay out of the house for at least 6-8 hours.. but of course you wanna keep doing laundry and dose the dog with anti flea crap to make sure no surviving flea survive. they lay eggs fast. bastards.
 
I tried the borax no luck at all so I went out bought flea collares and shampoo and also bout the spot on for fleas and tick the dogs who chose not to eat their flea collars still have no fleas but the other two cought them again I also aprayed their houses and around the pens with 55% malothion it kills everything including dogs so when you spray it make sure you keep them away from treated area for at least 2-3 hours or until you can no longer smell the arouma of the malation

Arrrrgghhh. Flea infestations can be a real pain. They're not only on your critters, but they get in the carpets, drapes, bedding, kennels, yard and everywhere else. Kill them one place and they come right back. Kill the adult fleas and the eggs they have laid hatch new ones. Wash the dog, bomb the house and go away for a few hours, wash the dogs bedding, and repeat two or three times.

You've got to fight them on all fronts simultaneously, and then again in a few days, and then again in a few days to get the newly hatching ones.

Frontline is a great product, and will rid your dog of fleas unless he keeps getting reinfested.

That Bio spot is what made my dogs hair fall out, be carefull with that stuff. I have used a dip before that worked well. I think it is a malathyon type product. I will try to find out the naame of it. Luckily I have not had to do it for 15 years or so:D.

thanks for that info, i was gonna try putting on flea stuff on my pup but i thought about waiting til next spring if we're gonna have a cold season. But Sophia is due to the vet on Sept 20th so i'll ask what the best stuff that actually works and pass on the info and see what the opinion is on what the vet suggest to you guys and find any ups or downs of the product.

alot of people who have cats are more likely to get fleas. i found out alot of cotton rabbits do carry fleas really bad and when one of my mom's cat catches a cotton rabbit, it just spreads fast and thats how she's been getting them so when my brother is home, he likes to shoot the rabbits and then just leave them or take them somewhere the cats wont find them away from the farm...

other than that when the population of rabbits are slim around the farm, the flea problems seem to stay away.

Yeah I have thought about it, BUT I'm still going to give it to my dog. I don't do it very often so I'm not worried about.

HappyJack sells this thing,Flea Beacon I think, cant think of the name off the top of my head but its a small trap with a light on it and sticky paper on it you place it in the room and the fleas are attracted to it it can wipe them out pretty good in a day or so you can also make your own by placing a small white bowl with water and some dish soap in it and place it under a night light on the floor. Fleas are attracted to light and white.

biospot topical (like advantix, etc) ?? or the biospot shampoo? She's shedding a fair amount, but not sure if it's any more/less than typical. Trying to use that stuff as little as possible though. I'll keep my watch for anything abnormal. not a fan of the toxins. especially on a young dog.

you guys are talking about FEEDING them bacon grease, right? not lathering up the coat with it, yeah? :p

Yeah.....:D On the rare occasion that I have bacon I pour it over the dogs food after it's cooked. Never thought about rubbing it on their coats.....Hmmmmm :eek:
