I started working on the the out-laws. They have some pretty steep hills on some ground that is a pain to farm. I might be able to get them to try and enroll 5-10 acres of it. It is not much but in my neck of the woods any little bit helps.
 
Went to the FSA office today. Got a maximum bid of $172 an acre. Pretty good for a 5 acre hill on the other side of a waterway that is a pain to farm. There going to put in the application.

For a lot of producers this type of enrollment makes sense. They do not have to put in the whole tract. If they have a small piece that floods a lot or is hard to farm it can pay for them to put it in. Spread the word to guys whose land you hunt on. I told a neighbor about what they are paying and he is going to look at putting in a low chunk he farms.

I might have to buy myself a beer. :beer:

Wow - that is a good price for CRP. Our area only gets about half of that - most CRP in our county will only pay between $60 and $95 with an average of about $80 per acre. This is below what landowners can get for cash rent. The local FSA committee has a lot to say about the CRP prices in their respective counties and if the overall feeling is to suppress CRP then they will try to keep the prices low.

So, what do you call that? Is it a good use of taxpayer's money for environmental protection, or is it a pork-barrel of taxpayer money for farmers?

I don't know you tell me. The government is renting land that is highly erodible for the going rental rate and locking that rate in for 10 to 15 years. I guess if you do not believe in CRP than it is pork. If you believe in CRP than it is environmental protection worth the cost.
