Effective and I used to hunt this way when I could hunt closer to home. Not my favorite way and not sustainable process on a 2-3 day trip.

Not just snow either. When high winds prevail for a couple days ... the pheasants get into some nasty cover (in mass) and wait for the winds to subside or for someone to make them move on.
 
The other day I was out, and my dog was way up ahead as usual, and he started flushing birds out of these trees, and I was about 200 yards away in some thick brush and the wind was right, and they started to fly over me.
