Low brow

In neighboring state, had a fantastic morning…a touch warm, but we were finished by about 10:30…hunted some gorgeous land that abuts a refuge…views are spectacular…

First day of trip. Hunters already parked at the 1st two spots we picked. Never had that last I was here.

Talked to another hunter between spots. Said he was seeing no birds in his marked spots from prior years. We struck out spot 1. Spot 2 was a mile hike in with no idea what the grass would look like. Contacted a group of 10ish sharpies and a couple singles, and a small covey of huns. Dogs were gassed long before we turned back to the truck. Killed a sharptail and a hun. Not the best dog work. It was well over 80 degs when we made it back. Cooler tomorrow hope it helps.

Cover looks decent. Surprised we didn't find more.

Spent 13 days in MT and found birds in spots and empty fields in other spots. Working pointing dogs and only shot when they did things perfectly, which is hard with a 10 month old at times. She busted plenty of birds and I refused to shoot until she did it right. Overall, I learned my new dogs and got good work in with them. Headed back to the Dakota's as soon as it cools off a bit and hoping to get them on as many birds as possible, not too worried about how many I shoot, but how they handle. talked with a guy that makes plenty of utube videos and he was having the same luck as he was traveling from Sout to the north of the state.

I'm not going to put my dogs through that heat.
Your choice, I hunt as often as I can. I always have plenty of water for her, hunted by ditches she cooled in, and done by noon. She was fine and loved it. She is going to have a wonderful life and a lot of different adventures. I am sure your dogs are enjoying sitting on the couch by the AC. 😀

I’ve hunted 8 days since 9/13; most days we’ve been done before noon, regardless of # of birds shot. I’ve hunted sharpies for 18 years, mainly in September…pheasant cover in 50-55 degree temps often is harder on the dogs than sharptail cover in 70 or 75 degree temps…every dog is different…we pay close attention to all dogs at all times .

You are right, hunting by water is the key. I just don't have a lot of short tail spots that are by water.

I just can't handle the September heat, and my 12-year-old definitely can't handle it. Jones can handle it but I'm just not into it. Some people are saying Sharp tails are way down, but I'm not sure about that. I don't really have an opinion yet but I will by mid-october.

Hopefully you guys didn't run into any snakes, The whole month of September hasn't been really really hot, and dry.

It’s a bit like ocean fishing or Great Lakes fishing…Mother Nature can alter our plans…good if you can schedule several extra days for the trip to allow for rest days if it’s too hot. Yesterday it was slow the first two walks, when temps were cooler, and the 3rd walk around noon was very productive, temps were in the 60’s but breezy…no issues at all with the 2 dogs I was running. Gorgeous out…walked into a covey that was spread out in some berries, maybe an acre or so…fifteen minutes, if that…much fun! Beautiful, secluded spot…lucky to be able to walk and take it all in! Grouse have been marinating in zesty Italian since yesterday, will grill them to rare/medium rare tonite, served with Asian noodles that have some veggie garnish on top…and grilled Texas toast. Made it this way last week…the grouse was amazing!

I forgot to mention that I don’t get 3-4 miles from the truck. My morning was hit a spot, do a big loop, hour to hour and half. Back to truck start it up and get ac going and give water in a bowl. My girl drinks in the field but sometimes she is excited. She knows we are going to sit at truck for a few and chill and then drive to our second spot with ac blowing even if we don’t need it. Mornings were cool, at the local cafe farmers were saying they had the first frost a couple days before I got there. I was in a little town I doubt any of you have ever heard of, Hilger. I read somewhere on the net a couple years ago it had great hunting.
