Scott City

Does anyone hunt the Scott City area? I will be heading there the week after Christmas. I have never hunted that area. I have a little private land (not much) to hunt and it doesn't look like there is a lot of walk-in. Just wonder what to expect. Thansk

I hunted there the last 2 days of season last year. There were plenty of birds left at that time, though they were pretty spooky. We would've been much closer to our limit on the 2nd day if it weren't for the wind. It was litterally blowing 40mph. There isn't much for cover out that way, so when you find cover, you usually find birds (obviously that statement is bound by time of day). We spent most of our time in the corn and milo fields. Each feed field we hunted held several hens and an average of 4 roosters. We hunted behind a feedlot Saturday evening and kicked up about 60 birds. There is 1 good WIHA CRP that we visited. It is surrounded by crop fields and held a few birds. PM me if you're interested in the specific location of that parcel.

I have been hunting around scott city for the past couple of years. My in-laws live there so it is a good way to visit the family and get into some birds. There is not a whole bunch of walk in access, however I have found that asking for permission, and being respectful has helped out a ton. The main problem right now is that the milo has not been cut in some areas. This gives the birds plenty of cover, which makes it harder. you shouldn't have any problems in December. I would hunt the tracks, hit a couple of walk-ins, and ask for permission. Seems to work well. Good luck!

Do you have to get permission from the landowners or the train company to hunt the tracks?

I have read that in Kansas you have to get the permission from the landowner that owns the land adjacent to the railroad right-of-way. In Iowa the railroad company actually owns the right-of-way and it requires the hunter to get permission from the railroad but in Kansas I believe that the adjacent landowner retains the ownersip rights to the right-of-way.

In checking the 2009 Kansas Hunting & Furharvesting Regulations Summary, on page 5 under the Trepass section, it states "Railroad rights-of-way require permission from the railroad." My father owns land that has a mile of railroad through it and we have always hunted the ROW without giving it a second thought. If ever stopped by law enforcement, I don't know how we would fare.
