Just a quick reminder to anyone coming out to SD yet this year for a hunt. If you purchase your license on or after Dec. 15th it is actually a 2014 license that license is then good for 5 days this season and 5 days any time next season.
 
ok thanks for that info it looks like i will be for sure going to SD 1 more time this season after DEC 15 to pheasant hunt!!! my dad has 5 days left on his license & i need a reason to head back to SD in 2014 so it looks like it will all work out i guess???

i trust you dakotazeb but that sounds to damn good to be true very cool SD has that as a option!!!
 
I'm hunting next week, only for a few day's and need to purchase a new 2013 license.

I gave the start date of 12/15 for the first 5 day's and Nov 15 2014 for the next period.

Then I tried Dec. 16 - no go; must use 2013 license in 2013. "for license past 1/31/14, purchase next year's license."

Bottom line: for three day's hunting in December, with a new license, no carry forward. At least that's my experience as of today...

Any thoughts???

I always come to SD twice, once with my wife, the other with my son.
We select the last five days of the next season for my son's license as the second five day period (we hunt 5 days after Xmas). One license covers two
Years for Erick. Have done it for years.

It has been this way for many years and has been posted on this site in the past. I just thought I would provide a little "Friendly South Dakota Reminder" and also inform some of the newer members.

jonnyB mis-understood what I said. You can not carry forward a 2013 license to the next season. In order to carry forward 5 days to next season the license must be purchased on or after Dec. 15, 2013. What you are buying is actually a 2014 license that is in fact good through 1/31/2015.

One needs to apply for the license after the 15th. Not before.

I guess I'm stuck buying a 2013 license (for the 10th to the 14th) and unable to use the second five-day's in 2013. I don't plan on hunting in January!!
 
Thank you my son and I are taking our first trip to South Dakota on the 21st & 22nd. This will be a good reason to go again next fall.
 
If your first date this season is 12/15/13 or later this year and you plan to
Go next year, it looks like the last five days of next year's season would start
12/31/14 and end 1/4/15. This is a unique benefit to us nr's if
You have the opportunity to use it.
 
Unfortunately, my first day/date is Dec. 10th.

Wish there was a five -day license that could be purchased prior to 12/15, other than the "preserve license."
 
I think/hope with the downturn in sales that the state looks at creative ways to enhance some hunters to return. . Personally, I would rather pay 125 for a 9 day license that would be able to be broken down into 3, 3day periods. Certainly there can be other options looked at.

The Dec15option has been something that I am able to utilize to my benefit sometimes also.

Sometimes it works, sometimes I have to leave 5days on the table ...

I think having more options than the current 2 5-day periods would be a good idea. The state couldn't offer too many different options but maybe being able to split your 10 days 2 or 3 different ways would work. I know lots of guys that don't want to, or can't, hunt for 5 straight days. As we age, like myself, 2 consecutive days in the field can be enough! :)
 
A kind fellow with the South Dakota wildlife authority explained the correct strategy for non-resident hunters picking their two five-day periods for hunting if they have plans for only one trip. Set your first five day period for when you plan to hunt; then set your second five day period to start five days before the season ends. That way, if you end up hunting a second time in the season you can adjust the commencement date forward, if necessary, to match up with your second hunt dates. If your second five-day period goes by and then you decided to hunt a second time you will have to buy a new license.
