I know You will have the "total" adventure.
Eager for the reports and pics.

Well guys, just got back from SD, there were 9 of us total 7 adults and 2 first timers 12 & 13. We hunted at u-guides property near Lake Andies. I will say it was one hell of a great hunt. If we could all shoot straight we would have limited out each day. We have hunted this property for the last 4 or 5 years, and this year we saw more birds (roosters) than we ever had before. At day break and sunset if you stood on the front patio you heard birds in every direction. Will say 95 % of the birds were this years with some very short tails, but we also got some 2 yr olds too. We brought back prob 60 birds, which isn't limits but that was our own fault not hitting them and we did loose a few in the very thick grass. If someone wants to learn how too farm for pheasants you need to check out Chris's operation. Will be going back next year for sure. Will try and get some pics off the phone and up here.:10sign:

SMO, You get lost out there on the prairie?

Time for a report and pics.

SMO, You get lost out there on the prairie?

Time for a report and pics.

I think his trip was delayed a little. Although getting lost on the prarie wouldn't really be a bad thing:). I talked to a guy at the super 8 in pierre that had been there for three weeks bird hunting. He was taking the saturday off tho watch college football and do laundry.

well guys i maid it back finely!!! my trip was delayed due to some bad weather so i hunted MN got 4-5 birds in 3 days hunting...

then i headed out to SD on thursday NOV.14 & i left SD yesterday NOV.17 at 1:00 p.m. so i hunted SD 4 days total came home with my 12 birds!!! 1st trip to SD was great to me i must of sat on a horseshoe because my shooting was top notch! ive never shoot so well in my life!!! should of had a true double but the young dog lost the 2nd bird "the only bird she lost of the trip" got a staggered double yesterday dog pointed bird flushed i shot it she retrieved it to me i loved her up & then she went back on point another rooster flushed i popped him also 4 my 2nd of the day she maid a nice water retrieve well ice water retrieve... i had 2 birds by 11:10 & missed a 3rd so i called it a trip with the cold wet stinky dog that was happy as a fart!!! went to town got some beer for MN it was SUN we dont sell beer on SUN in MN & headed east after about a hour on the road i passed a nice GPA that just shouted hunt me theres pheasants here & after a quick 10-15 min walk i flushed 3 roosters & got my 3rd bird 4 the day & 12th for the trip i was more then pleased my dog pointed held steady & retrieved the bird out of the lake it dropped in!!! she is a real bird dog now!!!

sorry for the long post lol i hunted from just across the MN border to say central SD in prime pheasant range i seen at least & im under shooting my numbers here at least 100-150 birds in the fields with me that i could of went after & hunted up... im not talking ditch pheasants or just seeing birds off in the distance im talking with me on the public lands or ajoining lands i seen 100-150 pheasants was enough to keep me walking around all day if need be... seen 25-50 birds a day hunting... seen another 60+ ditch birds if not more... seen a flock of 9 roosters i could of road hunted just watched em 4 a sec & kept on driving... should of had my limit by 1:00 pm 2-3 days my 1st day it took me the longest to get my birds due to a rude hunter following me around but my 1st 30 min in SD i had a bird down 15 min later bird #2 was dead... at every place i hunted if i pulled up & looked over the area & 1 or 2 ETC. places stood out & u new a pheasant would be there there was pheasants there & in #s but in the secondary habitat the not so good stuff you would only find so so bird #s if any birds at all... you have got to know how to read pheasant habitat & or know a pheasants daily routine like what time are in thick stuff & what time they are feeding & try to catch em in between if you want to only hunt EZ CRP grasses i avoided them CRP fileds i would pull up to a area & u would be able to tell there was birds there from the amount of pheasant feathers left at the parking spots some spots had no feathers so i moved on lol...

i hunted all public lands no ditch hunting no pay to play & never had to hunt the same peace of land twice!!! i did hunt the same public tract of land twice but i was on the hole other side of the area & got as many birds as on the other side got 4 out of that area... i will say this last & be done i do think bird #s may be down but all the locals i talked with said they did not see a big difference from the last 2-3 yrs??? there is still birds wear there is prime habitat there was loads of birds cackleing in the mornings at 2-3 spots i hunted i swear i left 1 spot to go try a new area & there was 12-15 roosters talking to each other on that public land it was great to hear!!! drive around till u see dead pheasants on the road & birds in the ditch then find the closest public lands & hunt the correct habitat & you will be in good shape in SD this yr... i shot as many birds in SD in 4 days then i did in MN this hole season i figured i should do that or i will not head back to SD & it happened there is still birds in SD boys just got to have a half way decint dog & shooting & hunt wear the birds are & u will have a blast...

no skunk encounters seen about 3-5 dead on my way back on 212 yesterday 1 around the areas i hunted they predator control pretty hard wear i was i think there was huge signs all over the state saying trap the predators & save the pheasants that was very cool to see!!! deer all over in heavy rut out in SD so drive careful if your driving at night or early morning hours i almost nailed 1 yesterday at 8:15 a.m.??? snow geese were in waves & loud as all get out ducks were also every wear seen hundreds & hundreds all over... no prairie grouse flushed or moved but i was not hunting prairies i was hunting pheasant habitat thick pheasant habitat so no chance at prairie grouse there...

also bring enough ammo to SD the small towns are no help ammo wise runnings is the king or cabelas but i just wanted to buy a extra box of steel & most the stores only sold lead & the 1s that sold steel only had 2 shot? on most the public lands in SD steel in needed so i shocked me when most the stores didnt have steel or didnt even know of the steel shot on public laws guess they hunt mostly private lands??? 1 hardware store was very helpful just didnt have 3 shot i fell in love with 3 shot this trip & 4 shot hypersonic loads what a combo!!!

thats it boys im done off to wash some clothes & rest up me & the dogs are a little beat after the hunt... i will be back to SD mid DEC i know that much let them cattails freeze up then its game on!!!

sorry no pics boys i will take a pic of the dog & her 12 birds i think took pics didnt save on the phone??? im mad!!! but was a great trip any way

SMO - nice report. Sounds like you covered a lot of ground but had some good success. Congrats to you and your pup!

think i covered 550 miles in SD hunting... mostly because i wanted to see if there was more & more birds the farther west i went... i got into birds near the MN border & in good numbers... more & more hunters the farther west i got same amount of birds maybe a little more but the hunters again were around more... had 8 trucks from KY pull up on me 2 times!!! 1 guy & dog was no match for 16-20 & god knows how many dogs...

i shot birds on every tract of public land i hunted but 1 spot & i could have shot 1 rooster there or more but there was a horse & cows near by & i didnt want to piss of the house in site... also seen 7 roosters across the road from that land shotgun distance from wear i parked i just was there at the wrong time i just hunted it cuz it was short CRP type grass & i needed to get the bulldogge out for a walk so i tried it...

i really didnt have to walk as much as i do in MN & for more birds if i just hunted the thick stuff only non stop i could of had birds faster but i wanted to explore the country a little & see whats over that hill ETC. SD is actually fun to pheasant hunt in MN alot of times its work work work & walk walk walk for few bird contacts but we do have pheasants to hunt dont get me wrong but SD is king for a reason...

had great success even finished the hunt strong & on a high note could not of asked for more out of the SD hunt i will head back early DEC for sure!!!

Makes all the gloom and doom earlier seem kind of silly now. :)

Good report SMO.
Sounds like your pup is about there.

Heading out this afternoon.....

SMO- Good looking bunch of birds there. Beautiful looking dog as well!

Heading out this afternoon for a solid week of hunting with the family. We will hunt a combination of public and private on our trip. Will try to post during the trip if have time otherwise will give a full report upon returning.

Gotta say, that's a beautiful dog.

If I were younger, think that the Small Munsterlander would be getting serious consideration for birdiness, tractibility, versitility, and congeniality.

I'll see how it goes, but I suspect that Mick may be my last hunting dog. He's done better than I had any right to expect, so that will be fine with me.

Nice image, great report.

Thank you.

thanks guys im am more then happy with that little dog she is a machine in the fields & a house dog the rest of the time dose not chase chickens or birds or cats on the farm either... i dont think i can get another breed after this dog??? she is 17 months now cant wait for a few years...
