2012 (states) pheasant outlook

2012 pheasant outlook for "pheasant states". Reading through a few state outlooks, it seems the info is nothing new and very general.

1P4, I agree it is a bit diluted for my tastes.

IMO, the data the states DNR gets is not an outlook, forecast or report at all but merely a count from biologists.

PF's report is just a summary of what the biologists are collecting for data.

That's why I started writing my own reports here based on what I was hearing and seeing on the ground from all our camps and even here on the forum.

Road counts have always thrown me for a loop:confused: Though usually their in the ball park with pheasant #'s, increases, decreases.

From what I've observed, pheasants will cackle one week or month, then shut up for a week or a month. Can't get them talk for nothing at times. If the mail carriers are listening for cackles during a quit spell, numbers may reflect an inaccuracy of the real on the ground population.

Add that in with what you mentioned a few weeks ago regarding fog/dew and birds being in the roads vs. dry conditions and birds staying clear of the roads, it seems "outlooks" can be inaccurate at times.

I think the biologist from Wis. got it right when he stated Wis. bird #'s may be higher due to what people are seeing on the ground. They're seeing broods/birds.

Thanks for the link by the way.

I agree with what you guys said above. Either way I'll be out there trying and up in N WI chasing some grouse.

No matter what the real truth is, you can count on SD GF&P stating that it will be one of the best years ever, year in and year out. And, a lot of folks will buy in to their press releases.
