I have been missed and I really do appreciate it!:)

Now before you get all teary let me where I have been the last 11 days. My wife and I own property in Georgia just west of Savannah. Beautiful country and when I was in sales I fell in love with the area in the 80's.

3 days of shirtsleeved quail hunting, golfed 4 rounds with friends, fished 3 different times and landed an almost--8 lb. largemouth and finally fell asleep once in the chair under our pecan trees. I also enjoyed delicious barbecue--mostly pork in this area--on two occasions.

I am working these last few years to make sure this becomes habit for us in the future!:)

As for our Iowa birds, I shelved the gun when the drifted snow and chilling winds arrived. I have stated on here many times that I need dog work and the enjoyment of being out there at this stage of my hunting. I am certain neither of those has been possible these last eight days or so in Iowa.:(

Georgia quail hunting is becoming part of my soul. I will share about these adventures sometime in the future. The two English springer spaniels were fantastic. A dinner of quail and wine is tough to top~!:)

Happy New Year to all of you friends and thanks again for the well wishes.

I pretty much figured you were doing something we all would like to be. Golf and Quail hunting fit the bill for me!

You picked a few good days to be away too. Welcome back!

Thanks IA at Heart!

We have been making this a staple part of our lives these last few years. My wife loves the shopping/antiques and you know what I like. I now have the desire to acquire a 28 gauge for the quail fields there. I will admit the day we had upper 40's I was thinking about all of you up here.

I will also need to invest in a treadmill for our home there. That barbeque is devilish for my waistline!:D

I hope you have a prosperous and healthy new year. If you do get out prior to Friday, may you find the birds plentiful and willing!!:)

Were you hunting wild quail? Sounds like a fun retreat. Been cold around here. Fewest pheasants hunters on a closing weekend I've ever seen.

Hello Guys,

I feel like I am a Georgia tourism director in development!:p

Wild quail season is open until Feb. 28th. Many other species as well. Over 1 million acres of walk-in hunting (management areas) in the state. Several close to where we live. I am interested in the grouse hunting there as well but need to do more research.

Yes they were wild quail to a degree. We did hunt one WIHA that bordered two game preserves that release and shoot quail. I am pretty confident that on this hunt we got in to some of those. I have made quick friends--imagine that--and we hunted wild quail most of the time.

Fishing regulations are on and off for trout and certain designated streams or rivers. That said, fishing is open on majority of lakes, ponds and streams all year. I cannot get used to the bass and their size having lived in the North for most of my life.

Seven public golf courses that are very well maintained and reasonably priced. I pay more to golf here in Iowa and on less of a maintained course.

John, no nickers but our normal pheasant hunting apparel fits in quite well as quail gear. You just don't need to wear as much due to the temps!:)

You guys will appreciate visitors "drooling" over pheasant mounts and big whitetail deer mounts that we have moved there. I guess everything is relative and they desire what Iowa has and I desire what they have!:p

Current temp here -3 degrees There 39 degrees

I kind of figured that quail hunting was a thing of the past in the South with the exception of put and take.

The idea of a Southern quail hunt sounds very nice. But, too many snakes in the South for me!

It's fun when the dogs point a rattler under the palmento's. Then on you hunt snakes, and cherish you're $500.00 pair of 20# weight, Gokey snake boots! You can go days without seeing one, but you know their out there, and some are big. Cottonmouth's scare me more. Rattlers seem sort of benign. In Florida they use a $100 dog... because that's all you'll pay for one, because they get snaked or alligator munchies.

Excellent to hear from you Ken! I've missed your stories.

Quail hunting . . . oh how I miss it, and my exposure has been limited to that experienced in Iowa, many years past now. I did get into one covey this year though, on public ground to boot.

My hunting partner, who I always refer to as "my buddy" given I don't have his permission to use his name, is originally from Kansas and lived in Missouri for decades. He often shares stories about his quail hunting days, how his pointers would work the birds, how the hunts were so pleasurable compared to deep cover pheasant hunts, etc. We many times talk about scouting southern Iowa in hopes for gaining permission and finding a covey or two. We just haven't followed through on that.

I fly to Phoenix a bunch for work, and they've Gambels quail all over the place. Doves too. I'll be sitting in some corporate conference room with quail bouncing about the window ledge. I nearly "drool" myself, and the locals are oblivious.

As for the Iowa pheasant season, we've had a few good days as of late. I popped out for a one field hunt yesterday and managed three. Saw many more. Planning a full day hunt tomorrow.

thats wasome kbell, were you walking or riding horse drawn buggys? heck it was even cold in georgia!!! but alot better than it has been up here. welcome home.

Thanks Roscoe,

I won't lose my affections(affliction??) for roosters but those quail are making advances on my soul.

No horse drawn wagons for me. I will state it like this. Quail hunting there is like our pheasant hunting here. Spots that hold birds and spots that don't. People that pursue them and people that do not. We walked private cover and it resembles our pheasant cover in many ways. Brushy draws and tall grasses are the norm. Wait till I get those boys to place some sorghum and rooster booster food plots around the cover!:)

Next time down the locals have promised to show me marsh hen hunting and some newer areas to the west to hunt. I didn't tell them but I am already in love!!:)

Oh I remember the end of the good ole days here in KS. Once upon a time in the SE part of the state the quail were so plentiful that shooting several several limits before lunch was not only possible but expected so that we could all go back to the house and enjoy lunch together after cleaning birds.

Those were the days! And, I don't remember those quail running or hanging out in the thick, nasty, timber like they do today. They were truly gentleman bobs. Unlike these gangsta quail we have today. LOL
