On October 23rd the 4th and 6th grade class from Annunciation BVM School in McSherrystown travelled to the McSherrystown Fish and Game to take part in a Youth Pollinator Habitat Project that was sponsored by the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of Pheasants Forever. It was a beautiful fall day with perfect weather for such a great event. Over 40 students plus teachers and other volunteers came out to learn about grassland habitat, pheasants, pheasants forever, water quality, macroinvertebrate life in the local creek and to plant pollinator habitat. Advancing Science from Gettysburg College was present to help teach the students about water quality and to look for small life in the creek that runs through the property. What made this project even more interesting is the creek that runs through the property. It is the same creek that was affected by the chemical plant fire over this past summer. With the help of Advancing Science, students were able to collect water samples from the creek to look for macroinvertebrate life. It was encouraging that the students were able to find organisms living in the creek that require clean water to survive in. Some of the species were considered sensitive and can only be found in clean water. Finally, all the students, volunteers and teachers went to the field to broadcast wildflower seeds that will provide important habitat for butterflies, bees and other insects.

The day ended with everybody meeting back at the clubhouse to eat lunch that was provided by the McSherrystown Fish and Game. All the kids were happy to get something to eat and they got to talk about all the events that took place in the morning. It was a great event and many thanks go out to all the volunteers who helped make this happen. All the participants were given a Pheasants Forever t-shirt and wrist band to take home. This was made possible due to donations from the McSherrystown Moose, McSherrystown Home Association and the McSherrystown Knights of Columbus. Thank you Sponsors!

On May 11 our chapter held a 2nd field trip with our pollinator project. Over 60 students went through stations that included a station on dog training and hunting with dogs courtesy of the Keystone Chapter of NAVHDA. We had two stations from advancing science and a fourth station about birds that was presented by a PF biologist. We planned to plant some plugs in our pollinator plot but the rain made us change our plans. It was still a good day and the kids had a great time.
