Youth Hunt - Field Reports Welcome

Hopefully there's someone can give a real feet on field report from this weekends youth hunt. We need to get more youngsters involved in hunting and away from game stations(PS3, Xbox).
Good luck to all the Youths this weekend!

Anybody see a rooster other than in Al's Oasis. Somebody give us some hope and change. Desperate in Iowa.

No youth report here, but I can attest that it was an absolutely miserable day on the prairie yesterday. I seriously doubt there were many folks in the field. I did not see any in my travels yesterday from Chamb to almost Pierre and back.. (backroads)

Took the kid down the road hunting today on my place, just me his old dog and the kid, now I'm getting old, the dog is out of shape, but the kid has all the energy in the world--we worked about half of a 17 acre CRP field and put up 11 birds--7 hens 4 roosters--all the roosters were to smart for us but it sure was fun. Spent the rest of the afternoon scouting places to duck hunt ( the old out of shape dog needed the rest --not me) and in doing so saw 8 more roosters and 4 hens and a hen with a chick that could barley fly. Put on about 30 miles scouting for ducks to see the 13 adult pheasants and the little chick.

I feel a little better about the up coming season but the numbers are down for sure.

P.S. The CRP has recovered from last years lack of rain--it was tough walking in grass waist deep with the tall western wheat heads at eye level. I did a lot less work to make things hunter friendly and more bird friendly this year---some people are in for a big surprise!!

Wow, that's a nice positive report. I'm glad to hear that. Thank you for the update. I'm heading up to SD for the first 5 days of the season. The place I'm going has added CRP, so I'm hoping to see numbers aren't as bad as there as being reported. Time will tell. I can't wait for the trip!

Thanks for the report and sounds promising--not all gloom and doom. The birds are where you find them... Look for the right stuff and you'll eventually find them even in a down year. I hear you about the getting in shape, me and the dog. Took a 50 minute romp this am and have been roading the dog with bike. We're almost there!
