wolf encounter

was grouse hunting yesterday and was coming to the end of my walk on a non-atv trail...2 miles in...quiet, it had rained earlier...ascended atop a large ridge, stopped to catch my breath, and immediately saw one, then a second wolf...the minute I saw the second it starting loping towards my dog and I...I called for her and she came, thankfully, and I turned and got the hell out of there...I had 10 shells with me, #7.5's...I did not shoot... I didn't want the dog to become curious and go to "visit"...the wolf stopped at about 50-60 yards, which it did once I screamed for the dog...I see much wolf scat in this area, and have heard them howling before...but have never walked right into their bedroom...big sons a bitches...dnr trapped 3 and killed them in this area this summer, and a guy I know has a neighbor who killed 2 more...lots of dogs have been killed by them between duluth and grand marais...kind of spooky!

We need a longer and more liberal wolf season

Good to here everything ended ok for both you and your dog. The wolf lovers just have no idea how many of these damn things we actually have roaming around. The wolf protectors need a couple of their dogs eaten then they will change their minds about hunting the animal.

Visiting Ely two summers ago I came up on one while on a run around a lake in town. I'd guess 30 feet. It seemed to have a destination in mind and kept on its way. Pretty cool encounter. I think I'd start carrying some heavier loads just in case.
