Wisconsin Hunt Clubs

Thought I'd start a new thread where we can post our experiences at hunt clubs in Wisconsin.

This past Friday I had off work so decided to try to find a place that might have still had some birds left. I don't belong to a club, but will try places from time to time that offer by-the-bird daily hunts.

I found a place Craigslist that had roosters for $ 18/each. It was Theresa Gamebirds. Thats a good price especially this late in the year given the farm had to feed them all winter. I called and made arrangements to get 6 birds for Friday morning.

I got there and met the owner and his wife. The place is basically just a working farm (no clubhouse, dog facilities, etc). I parked my truck behind the house and was a little suprised that there were chickens, ducks, and farm cats walking openly all over the place.

I paid them for the birds, then they had me sign a waiver (no problem) then went over the rules/boundaries as I would have the hunting area to myself. They also gave me a map with hunting areas marked which was helpful.

Then they guy says well how do you want to handle the birds? I said I'm not sure what you mean? He said well do you want to put them out or do you want me to? I said they aren't out yet? Nope. I said go ahead and put them all out in the thicker cover. He says...well, it is almost April so the cover isn't the best...are you sure that you want them all out or did you want to put some out? I said I was there to do a hunt, not to dog train. He said well its likely some will probably run off. I said can you dizzy them? He said yes.

Then...get this...he says I have a few things I have to get done so would you mind helping my wife to round up the birds from out of flight pen? I'm like....huh? He says basically just go in the pen and help block them while she tries to catch them in a fishing landing net. I said I guess so. I then asked where I should park my truck. He looks out the window and says right where you are is fine. I'm like...you've got chickens and ducks and cats walking around and I don't have leashes along for my dogs so it will be a free for all if I let the dogs out there. He grumbles something and says to park behind the barn which I did.

He and his wife then take an ATV and go put the birds out and we start the hunt. The hunting area is basically a small swamp/drainage area, a thicket of mixed pines and bushes, and a woodlot. Pretty quickly we put up one that was hidden in a patch of marsh grass. Dogs got birdy again and were clearly on a runner that vanished into the thicket. One other bird was planted on the edge of the woodlot and holed up under a deadfall so we were able to get him. We saw two other runners way up ahead and that was it, other than when I came across the neighbor standing with his arms crossed right on the property line. I was warned about him not to go on his property or not to let my dogs because he would be watching for sure. He was...never said a word but it was still a little uncomfortable.

To their credit, the birds were in really nice condition. Big birds, healthy looking and good flyers. If you have a pup to train and are up that way (1 1/2 miles west of Theresa) I'd probably suggest it if you have no other options, but am not going back for a "hunt" anytime soon.

game farms

Thats hilarious! There's a couple like that near my home in oconomowoc. Basically working farms that will put out pheasants for you after you arrive. What I don't like is that they are usually close to the highway, are small in acres and usually have barbed wire around. I really enjoyed dark acres near jefferson. That's a more professional operation. They are going to a membership next year I think though. I just like to hunt game farms after 12/31 though. Would be nice to find some other options for day hunts. Anybody else have reccomendations?

I've been up to Cedar Valley Hunt Club a couple of times this year. They are a newer operation but really seem to want to do it right. Small clubhouse and fairly reasonable prices. They are east of West Bend, techniqually in Fredonia I guess. They have basically two areas to hunt, one behind their clubhouse/farm which is more open cover and another field off hwy M that is small pines and grasses. I really like the hwy M field as I have flushers and it is more the kind of cover I like to hunt. They are on Facebook but dont have a website that I'm aware of. Phone there is 262-689-2683

Does anyone know anything about Cackle Creek in Ashippan? They were at the Pheasants Forever banquet and donated a few hunts to the PF raffle. I like to support places like that which support the sport.

Just finished cleaning birds from Oasis Game farm near New Glarus. Nice people, but...

I followed the lady's truck out as she went out to plant the birds. I emphasized that I wanted the birds REALLY dizzy, because my last outing there, the rooster flushed over a 1/4 mile ahead of us with no provocation.

I parked and waited for her to drive back up, after putting the birds down in some lowland, out of the gusty winds. She gave me a general direction to head, and went back to the house. Mick and I headed out.

As I topped a hill two minutes later, I could see the rooster walking across the farm road, then up the side of the hill. He'd stop at cover, and then...because he'd never SEEN cover before, kept on walking. So much for making him very dizzy. :(

We eventually moved him, but he was 150 yards out. The only good news was that he circled back up to the hilltop where I started. Mick finally got him up about 45 minutes later.

I dunno. I guess this is the best way for an enterprise to put birds out, but the whole experience was...disappointing. The hen sat and flushed TO me, and the rooster had no idea what the hell he was doing outside the pen.

It is what it is. Just feels odd to come back with birds after hunting and feeling like I'd been shopping, instead of hunting.

dunno

LOL...funny. Still a good report, thanks for sharing.

I feel a little like a grocery shopper too after some of these game farm hunts, but I love being able to let the dog work a little and pull the trigger on a bird 3 months after the actual hunting season ends. I also feel less guilty as I dine on fresh pheasant fajitas. :)

Joined Blonhaven, in Orfordville last year. Reasonable packages for blue collar people. It's a busy operation with a lot of foot traffic, so like most places after snow, not much cover, earlier is much more enjoyable. We would always put out 3 birds per man, and almost always harvested extra birds. No charge for shooting extra birds, our best day 2 of us shot and recovered 18. Good bang for the buck. Will be signing up again.

I want to repost the info I had on Cackle Creek in Ashippun. The original post was lost with the server change over.I hunted Cackle Creek last november & had a positive experience. The birds were out when I got there and he left me and my dog alone to hunt which is how I like it.I don't know if their are more fields to hunt than the one I hunted in or not.The area I hunted had a few smaller sorghum & grass areas plus fencelines....kind of like hunting a farm which it is.I don't have a lot to compare it too but I was happy and it was competively priced.Anyone hunt Rustling Meadows in Berlin Wis. or Mike Norton's Fishing & Hunting adventures in Green Lake County Wis. I'm ckecking out places for this fall and winter.
