Since we're in the middle of late season hunting, I thought I would do a quick cold weather boot review. I normally wear Irish Setter Wingshooter boots for most of my bird hunting but when there's snow/ice on the ground and it's freezing cold or wet and muddy....I've learned there are better boots to wear. I bought a pair of 10" Schnee's Hunter boots before a big game hunt a few years ago but haven't used them much since. They were great on snow filled or wet, muddy trails but killed my ankle's on steep climbs and side hilling in the mountains, so I went back to my stiffer and all leather Lowa and Zamberlain boots for that type of terrain. Recently, I had a chance to hunt in snowy, cold weather on mostly flat ground and decided to give the Schnee boots another try. They were great. FWIW, Schnee is based in Montana.
They have air bob soles, a 400 gram Thinsulate liner and thick leather tops. They are a relatively light weight pack boot. I treated the leather and hunted for 7 days in the snow...walking multiple miles a day. I had warm, dry feet all week. No blisters. Solid traction on packed down roads and snowy trails. No slipping and the rubber bottoms were perfect for walking in several inches of snow. A really nice boot for late season hunting on flat ground and my new winter bird hunting boot.
