Wild Rice for ducks

We are harvesting wild rice right now and this is a great time to get some planted in your favorite duck hole. Since you are going out to the pond anyway, take some rice along and plant it.

Requires 12 to 36 inches of water depth and a muddy bottom...that is it. Just reach in the bag and throw the rice out over the water and it will self seed.

We planted a pond south of town last year as a scout project and it really took off...beautiful stand of rice! And there are more ducks in that pond now as well.

Let me know if there are any questions about wild rice and I will be happy to discuss.

Just a note, it has to be fresh harvested wild rice and it needs to be kept wet until planted. It took three years of planting to get it started in my pond. I only have about 6-12 plants coming up this year. It will get thicker.

Just another note. The rice can take over the pond and make less room for water and ducks. I'm hoping that that doesn't happen, I may have too much of a good thing. I was told that planting other waterfowl foods would be better but the wild rice was "Free" and I went with it. I also have been planting Red Oaks around my pond. I may not benefit in my life time from them but maybe my two sons will or the lucky person who buys my farm will. The woodies will love them acorns when they drop off the tree's into the water, along with some rice.

Good Luck everyone
