Wild Birds 2012!

It's that time again Wisconsin boys! Let's brag about those rare and hard to get non-released truly wild birds.

Unfortunately I have not had a chance to hunt any. Opening day I only had 1.5 hours to hunt due to son's baseball game. I headed out to the closest place to my house and they release birds there. I only saw 1 rooster and missed it.
On Sunday I had 3 hours to hunt due to a annual Packer's Party commitment. I chose to head out to another release land so I could try and get into birds with the dog.

This weekend I'm headed to Iowa for the opener there. I'm hoping you all leave me a few of these "wild" birds for when I get a chance to hunt them in November.

I'm looking forward to hearing some great stories. They motivated me to keep pounding out those tough birds last year.

Are you finding any in SE Wisconsin? I spent a fair amount of time in Walworth county late summer scouting, to no avail. I remember as a little kid growing up in Franklin I used to take the family poodle (yep, poodle) along fencelines and flush birds. It's sad that is nothing but a memory.

Wild

I've yet to hunt any wild birds this season. I will be going out the first weekend of November to chase the wild birds.
I know a couple of spots that will produce for me. I will report back my results then.

I give up trying to convince guys we have plenty of wild birds to hunt.

LOL.....same just south of you here in IL too Wisturk. I even have pictures and videos of our wild birds. Wild, wild, wild. Some still won't believe me. One guy told me all the birds were pen birds:eek:

What is-is.

My bro kicked up 15 wild birds last weekend in FDL county. I'm heading up there this weekend for the Packers game but can't bring the dogs :(

are you sure you would say 'plenty' ???

Plenty to kill double digit numbers of them a season? Yes

Plenty to be able to sleep in hung over on a Saturday and hunt for 2 hours, kill a couple, and go back home and tell everyone how awesome you are several times a season? No

Plenty to almost always see a rooster, hear some cackling, and a lot of the time get some shooting? Certainly.

Plenty that it's more shooting, less work? Nope not usually.

I'm sitting in a marsh right now. I've been walking busting heavy cover for almost 6 hours. I've seen 7 hens which gave the dogs some pointing fun. Saw 4 roosters but to far. Also heard some cackling early.

To me that is plenty to keep coming back but a lot of guys wouldn't even put forth the effort once.

Wild!

Went after wild birds for the first time this season in Wisconsin. Went to a spot were I know some are and came up empty today. Maybe better luck tomorrow. I'm trying my other spot that I know holds a few.

Found some birds yesterday and went back there this morning and got my limit. Saw and heard several other birds flying from the marsh to corn and to other areas of the marsh during the morning too. Plenty seems about right. Also saw a rooster on the way home flying very near a nice chunk of public land.

Nice birds Wisturk.:) Good looking dogs too;)

If you can save breast feathers (10-15) from each bird (please) that would be great! I need samples from your area.

Thank you!

Nick

I'll get you some off the next ones I kill,I tossed them in the garbage and got them all mixed up after cleaning them.

Wild Bird Pursuit!

Well I went to my other spot that holds wild birds and came out skunked on Sunday. I did flush 2 hens though. I heard at least 3 roosters cackling but the corn was still up on the 3 bordering properties and they seemed to be in the corn or beat me to the corn before I could get to their location.
Stay tuned later in the season I will report these birds in the bag.

I got this one early in the year on public but very few wild birds in SW, I had a farm near Evansville several years ago that had lots of birds, but he took it out of CRP now none. If I want wild birds I go to ND, but that's winding down now to.

O good friend was in SW WI around Darlington / Belmont over the Holiday. That has been a prime pheasant area in WI and there are almost no birds around any longer. They put in a ton of time hunting and saw a handful.

I have hunted that area with him in the past 10 years and and we have seen as many as 80 birds in a day. Now it's less than 10.

From what I have gathered the best areas are in Dodge and Fond Du Lac Co's.

Got a question about Wisconsin Phes.? We spent 5 years in Madison and traveled the lower third of the state from the Mississippi to the big lake. I cannot understand how a state with such rolling terrain, varied crops, hay fields, pasture land, swamps, sloughs and every type of field imaginable not produce great numbers of Phes. I am not trying to be a smart a$$ but really don't understand. If I was a Phes I would sure consider living there.
Thanks
Bob

We have pockets of wild birds. There is large gaps of land that is of no use to pheasants between the marshes and remnant prairies that hold the birds. We don't have great numbers but anyone whining about not finding wild pheasants tells more about themselves then the wild pheasants here.

Wild Birds!

Hold out your hope Sconie hunters. I put on miles and let me tell you, I mean miles and even mad dashed sprinted through the thickest cover to get some shots on wild birds and so far I have been blessed to land 3 in the bag. The birds that are out there are very smart and I feel lucky to even get close enough to see them fly off in the distance. But if you continue your chase one day you may get lucky and have a chance to fire your gun.
I'm very appreciative of the opportunities that were brought my way this season.
I hope to get a few more opportunities to get out there and walk until I can't walk anymore just for the opportunity to even shoot at 1 more wild bird this season.
I wish for each of you that are willing to go out there and make it happen the same opportunity.

Good luck all!

Watching a guy with a messed up achillies bust through some heavy cover to get to the end for nothing would make for some good video.

I'll bring the gopro next time.:D
