Im still debating about going. there is a public hunting ground were I heard them drumming this spring. Theres a few spots here in Waupaca county but the further north you go the better off you will be.
good luck let me know how you did and where you went. Ill try to keep updates in here as well.
Went up to Bayfield county this weekend to try some new spots a guy I work with told me about. When we hunted his spots we found two birds in two hours, then 1 more later that afternoon. I tried a different spot on Sunday and went by myself. The dogs and I flushed a total of 10 grouse and 3 woodcock. I only managed to scratch down 1 grouse, only saw 2 of the ten, that flushed. Looking forward to learning more new areas as the season goes on.
Made it out yesterday for a little over a hour. Flushed four. Only had a shot at one and missed as always. This will be the year I put one in the game bag.
Will be up north for a long weekend in one week. Can't wait. Anybody been hunting Price county? Curious on bird numbers and what the woodcock situation is like. Thanks. Will report back after our weekend.
Just got back from nw WI. In 3days had 30 flushes, got a glimpse of 15 & got one bird. Cover was thick & best action was in real swampy areas of clearcut & alders. My first grouse hunt & I loved it! Hope to go back by mid month.
Went real quick once last week after work. the dog and I found 1 wood cock and one grouse no shots at either. It was nice to see them. Hope to get a chance to get up north by the old deer camp my dad told me about the grouse they used to flush when they went hunting up there. Keep the updates coming these are great!
Was up north Thursday through today. What horrible weather and had some awful luck. Ducks have seen a lot of pressure and had to work way to hard for three green wing teal. Not sure if the grouse shut down in the heat or the dog was off his game but we flushed one grouse and 5 woodcock. Got a hold of one of the woodcock and as of right now it is going on the wall. Biggest woodcock I have ever seen let alone shot.
Now for the luck...
Dog wound up with swimmers tail after Saturday mornings duck hunt so that really hurt the grouse hunting. Already looking better so hopefully by next weekend we can chase some woodcock around here. I shot a Franchi I-12 and the tab you pull the action back fell out on Saturdays duck hunt while shooting. I did find it when I cleaned the boat out this morning but it was a pain for the rest of the weekend. The charging system on my mud motor also stopped working and we wound up with a dead battery out on the lake. Thank the lord we drove to the close launch instead of running a 25 min boat ride. All in all it was a very frustrating weekend but was still better then being at work.
