Whitewing doves showing up in KS!

Did a youth/mentor dove hunt on the McPherson Wetlands yesterday.

Interesting side note on the hunt was the number of whitewing doves we saw. Anyone else seeing these birds outside of their normal range?

With the warm temperatures we've seen the last couple of years here in KS, I guess it's not surprising that birds more common to the desert SW would be showing up here.

You can check out an article about our hunt in today's Wichita Eagle:

The kids had a great time.

I hope everyone is planning on taking kids hunting this fall!

Good to hear Mike. I talked with Theede last week! Interesting to hear about the white wings. Hope the kids had a good outing. Heard you had a bunch of them! I do appreciate your efforts!

Pretty neat, read that article this morning. Seeing a lot of Euroasian Collared Doves around here the last few years.

Both the White-Winged and Eurasian doves are riding a perfect storm. The Whitewing doves were reported as far north as Illinois.

People buy tons of bird food thinking that they are feeding song birds like blue jays or cardinals, but they are really helping to expand the range of the Eurasian and the White-Winged dove.
In addition, in this hot weather when people water their grass they also provide water for doves, helping to provide moisture for them and their young.

For more back ground information on the expanding White-Winged dove range see article below:
