Whitetail fawns

My hired man and I pull in to the Ponderosa this morning and I see a whitetail doe about a quarter mile away sprinting over a terrace coming out of my CRP grass and going into my wheat field. I say to my hand, "Look at the doe and the fawn running behind her" and as I pull forward just a bit I say, "Hey that isn't a fawn, it's a coyote chasing her." My hand says, "Look, there are two fawns running ahead of the doe."

They all disappeared in my shelterbelt and later a doe and one fawn appeared then disappeared. Later a lone fawn appeared, looked around and headed for the creek and disappeared in the tall weeds. Never did see the coyote again. I don't know how this ended, but need to end it for a coyote.

You got a front row seat to an interesting predator/prey interaction. Not a lot of folks get to see that. On a related topic, we got to see triplets on the area this week.

There may have been triplets here also. My hired man thought he had seen something go into the shelterbelt ahead of the first fawn. After the encounter the doe and a fawn was seen, then another fawn by itself, but no sign of the coyote. Makes us wonder if there were three and the coyote got one and was out of sight.

I have seen more coyotes this spring than ever before. Time to seriously start carrying the M4 with me in the truck and on the tractor.

There is one that must have a den across the road from me because it howls at the same spot almost every night and I believe its the one I have been seeing close to the house as well.
