Where to go?

I have Friday to hunt and I'm not sure where I should go. Should I stay local and hit the gamelands looking for holdover pheasants? Or head north to areas I've never been before to look for grouse? I've been hearing that grouse numbers are down but I'll never find out about areas if I don't go. I think I'll look at some of my state forest maps to help me decide.

Brian,

If you have had only limited time out for pheasant and taken only a few, I would say stay local. But that's far from the case. It's time for you to leave grasshopper. :)

Not sure how far you want to travel, but that spot I told you about is FAIR to Good this year, some years it's excellent.
The only way
to start to put together a good game plan for grouse is to start to put the work in. By the time your boys are hunting along side you, you'll have a half dozen honey holes to go to!

Good luck "ENJOY" and be safe!

Thanks FLDBRED. I'm planning on going in the southern part of Rothrock SF. It will take me 2-2.5 hours to get there depending on the traffic. The area you mentioned is 3.5 hours away. I'm not sure I want to spend 7+ hours driving in one day. I was thinking of heading that far north but I can't find the map I had of recent timbering locations so I decided to stay closer to home. I have a friend who has a cabin in the northern part of the state but we could never work out the time to go up together.

Right now I think I'll start trying to find places that are a little closer to home. Driving 5 hours round trip sounds a lot better to me than 7 or 8. Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try and find more out about the areas you mentioned and maybe I'll extend my range.

Like FLDBRD stated, youve done really good on pheasant this year so why not give your dogs a new challenge. There's some decent grouse inmy area so if you want you could PM me for a location.
Whatever you decide good luck!

Thanks for the offer. I appreciate it, especially considering how most hunters like to keep their grouse hunting grounds on the secretive side. And I understand why.

I'll let everybody know how I make out on Friday. Thanks again for the help.

You guys are lucky to have areas so close to home. To do any sort of hunting I have to drive an hour at least. To do some of our bird hunting it's a 3 hour trip one way!

I tried a different section today and came up empty handed again. No flushes or even acting birdy. It was a beautiful day with a clear sky and bright sun, so it wasn't all bad. I felt bad that the dogs didn't find any birds so I stopped at the spot close to home and the dogs were able to work some hens and a rooster there. They got a good bath when we got home and will get some rest. I've been asked to guide next week at a preserve and I have Friday morning reserved at the same place. After that things will be shut down for the most part. Hopefully I get a chance to go to Onpoint later this winter. I always enjoy going out there. Good luck if anybody else gets out and let us know how you make out.
