Probably a 1 in a million chance of rabies with raccoons. Bats are another story.

I've had to wade into waist deep water to end a fight. We had 4 dogs trying to tag team the coon. We never had a clear shot from the bank. My young dog went under with coon on its head. I found myself standing in the water wondering "where are they coming up?" a second or two later they popped up separated with the coon about 2 feet from me. a clear shot and 1 1/8 oz of #5 ended the drama. I try to un-life them too, so I dont have to deal with them later in the hunt. Coon hound paralysis is a risk from their saliva.
