When to go?

I just joined the forum and want to say hello to everyone. I have spent several hours reading through the posts on this forum and man there is a lot of information here.

I am planning a trip to Kansas this year to hunt pheasant and quail with my dad. This will be our first trip to Kansas so it will probably be more of a recon trip unless we get lucky on the places we choose to hunt and find good birds. We will be bringing two brittanys and one shorthair. I hope this will be enough dog power. We plan to stay in Hays and hunt the walk in areas north and south of there.

We have two weeks in mind to actually spend hunting November 15-19 and December 13-17, 2010. Which week does everybody think would be better for hunting? On adverage what kind of weather should we expect during mid November and Mid December? What are some good places to stay and eat in Hays. I will be looking for a hotel that allows dogs.

Thanks
Bobby

Bobby, welcome to UPH!!!! If I had to choose I would go in December!!! The weather will be hopefully cooler than November!!! Could be a blizzard though as well!! Just never know!!!!! As for places to stay, there are some gents on here that might be able to help you out!!! Good luck!!

Hello Bobby, welcome to UPH - I can't help you much with the lodging either but I'm with Bleu, Dec gets my vote hands-down!!! Less hunters, more chance of all the corn being down, & if you're real lucky maybe just enough dusting of snow for a day or two to make them roosters hold tight like quail!

Welcome to the forum. My choice would be the December date. Who knows about the weather. I have been in a lot of openers and beyond when it was t-shirt weather. Only have vivid memories of one opener that even this old diehard was ready to throw in the towel, it was an early blizzard. There could be t-shirt weather in December, but chances, of course are better for some cold weather and you and the dogs will like it better. Hey, guys on the forum, mark those dates in December on your calendar for a blizzard, since I recommended them.

Don't really have any recommendations in Hays for food or lodging since I don't get there much now that my sons are gone and I don't have ball games to go to there, but I am sure there are plenty on here that have stayed in the Russell/Hays area. If you are German Catholic you will be in really good shape.

Deadly Bird Team in Route to Kansas

You five - two hunters, three bird dogs - will have a blast in the great and hospitable state of Kansas, my home place. Get out your walk-in maps, fill the gas tank (repeatedly), and get acquainted with the big country of the high plains of Western Kansas, a place of legend and vast horizons.

Britchaser is right, you've got a heckuva a hunting team. Having a brit and a shorthair in the mix is perfect for KS hunting....having 2 brits is even better. And only 2 guys.....this provides a list of opportunities all by itself, but I don't have time to elaborate at the moment. Like the other guys have stated, December weather is typically more suitable and the crops should be out. If we could count on crops being out and cold weather to get here by then, I think some people would recommend November. The only drawback then being the # of hunters in the state. I can't count on November being cold these days as I've actually been sunburned in November twice in recent memory.

welcome to the forum. I went to college out at Hays and there is plenty of good walk-in out there. I agree w/ everyone else that Dec. would be the better time to go not as many hunters in Dec. as there would be in Nov. around the Hays/Russell area and the weather might be a little colder.

As for lodging there are several hotels that cater to animals as well. For good eating I would recommend the Liquid Bread Brewing Co. downtown right off main. They have some good ole German Dishes and the Beer is damn good itself. Best of luck hunting to you. Hope u enjoy Western. Kansas hunting.

We had a PF meeting at a micro brewery in downtown Hays, but I don't remember the name. Had a sampler platter of six of their beers, they looked good, but since I don't drink anymore, I couldn't tell you. Liquid Bread Brewing Co. doesn't sound like the right name though.

So I know this is going to sound stupid but is December better than January ?

So I know this is going to sound stupid but is December better than January ?

Remember the old saying---

"Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today"-----

Why?, you ask------

Well, because you might find out that you like it so much that you will want to do it again tomorrow.

I personally like January hunts, but that is me and I don't have to travel.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice. I will plan to go in December and hope it does not come a blizzard. Sounds like I will have to eat at Gellas/Lb. Brewing Co.

Here is the phone # for the Hays visitors center 800-569-4505. Give them a call they've got a hunting info pack they'll send you in the mail!

Best of luck!
