When life gives you snipe... and a coot!

Having Mondays off, with pheasant opener fast approaching here in Iowa, I figured it was time to knock the rust off of Rusty. I went to a local marsh hoping to work some pheasants and maybe jump a few ducks. Seven roosters and five hens in two hours was more than I could of hoped for, most pheasants were pointed and the others flushed while being tracked. I ran into a dozen woodies but they all flushed wisely with oak brush as a screen. The snipe however were fair game today. Trying to lead a bird that flies in an actual zigzag pattern is always a fun challenge and I'm looking forward to those little birds on the grill this Saturday for the Hawkeyes' season opener. Maybe the most surprising part of my day is that all 7 roosters presented easy shots, I certainly won't be counting on that in the coming months.
P.s. My dog tracked that crippled coot for 150yds along a slough edge before I saw it poke out of the reeds, at which point I finished the job and Rusty made the retrieve
