ok im hunting public ground yesterday close to my house i no of a really crafty covey of birds i get out with my new dog thats 4sale by the way, anyway im walking down the road to get the right wind and they jump up WOW real skittish i see where they land get closer jump again not even a chance at shooting cant beleive it cold as it was i follow theire tracks running of course and end of tracks and end of public ground of course my dog goes on the private gound up a fencerow and slam on point im saying oh boy now what 8month dog dont want to pull him off point what do yoiu do be honest.

Put your gun down, walk and flush the birds, yell Bang Bang, praise your pup for doing such a great job, turn around and retrieve gun and continue hunting on Public Land...

I agree with Kiotehntr...the only thing I would do a bit differently...is that I would circle the dog and TRY to kick them up where they would happen to fly back to ground I can hunt. Doesnt always work..but...it might...

Sorry, you should just call him back off of the point. No trespassing is allowed on the private ground beyond the signs.

Cass, assuming that you hunt with a dog do you really think that he would come to you if you called him while he was on point? I know that my GSP wouldn't pay me any attention once he locked up and was on point because he is doing what he was bred and trained to do. I'm not going to use my shock collar and shock him to make him break point either, it sends out the wrong message. If you do what I suggested in my first post you should be just fine. If the landowner comes out and raises cane, let them. Just explain what happened, if they want to call the police or warden, let them, you are unarmed and just retreiving your dog, what happens if your dog gets loose and runs all over town and you find him sitting in a yard and he won't come to you? Do you not go get him because he's in someone's yard? That is trespassing as well, so do you just lose the dog?

This is exactly what I would try to do!!!

You have to make your own decision, but what you describe is against the WIHA regulations and against the law since the back of each WIHA sign is printed with no trespassing. I know several landowners who hate the fact that there is WIHA land adjacent to their property and hate the hunters who disregard the signs and venture onto their land. They are already fighting to get the program shutdown and will call the authorities when you cross onto their property.

The adjacent land to most of the WIHA's that I hunt around is owned by the same farmer who has the tracts enrolled, so it's not really an issue. Like I said let them call the authorities, yes you are trespassing but you aren't trespassing to pursue game, you are trespassing to retrieve your dog, the farmer and/or authorities should recognize the difference.

And I know plenty of Farmers that love the WIHA program.... Helps with their taxes, $1.50 and acre. Of course thats besides the point. Cass you just seem like the sky is falling kinda guy.

I'm in the same boat as kio, I'd go get my dog, honor the point, flush the bird and leave. End of story.

I understand the fact that their are plenty of guys who completely disregard the signs and venture way to far into their land, obiously I don't agree with that. In this particular situation I'd do it 100 percent of the time.

So what did you do? And be honest....:D

I'm agree with K, on this. Once my dog is on point he will not leave until I come a flush that bird. I can shoot in the air and do anything you can dream of. He will not release until the bird is flushed for him. I'm sure onpoint's dog is the same. I think putting the gun down and going after the dog without a gun should prove. You are just getting your dog to come back to where it belongs.......Bob

Well, that's the first time I've ever been called a "sky is falling kinda guy", ha! Sorry you don't agree, but the title of the thread was "what would you do?", so I thought I would share the concerns I've heard.

A couple of years ago I would have probably said not to worry, but since then I've been surprised to find several landowners who were very outspoken against WIHA based on problems they've had with hunters. Their attitude kind of shocked me at first, but after hearing some of the stories I understand their concern.

HMMM...Walk in ground close to home, next to private same farmer owns them, close to you, so you probably know who the land owner is or could find out relatively easy.....I'll be honest since its an 8 month old pup on a wild covey, I go work the covey and retrieve the dog, I sure as hell am not going to call the dog off point. I would go so far as to take the gun with me and shoot the gun not into the covey, I would not harvest a bird for the dog on private ground without permission, but I would work it and treat it like a training session, good stuff for a young pup.
I know thats not what most here would do, but I am being honest here.

I agree with Cass.Call you dog back BEFORE he enters private land we have no business on private land and we dont know if there are any hazards over there. If you can't call your dog back when hes making game,he may be in need of more training...he should obey your commands no matter what is going on.
