What rifle for coyote

I have a bunch of cabela points and thinking about coyote hunting, but dont know what gun to buy. Ill probably abuse the he!! out of it so cheaper will be better. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I shoot a .223 my buddy a .204. We both have ARs which are nice when you miss the first shot . If I was going cheap it would be either a CZ or Savage.

Personal preference really. If you are going to cover a lot of ground, get something light. If you want good accuracy, get a heavier barrel, bolt action gun. My buddy loves his over under 223-20gauge. If they are close he pops them with the 20. I have a Rem 22-250 with the bull barrel, that just shoots darts. If you do not reload, then go with what ammo is readily available and cheapest.

223 and 22-250 are as good a round as any are. The old man is the yote blaster of our family. He is a nut on that stuff. he just got a Colt Carr, loves it. had an H&K for years. When I go I use my 243 win. I can get 55 grain bullets now and with these new 243 rounds it ranks up there with any of em for speed and acuracy.
How have you guy's been doing down there on Yotes? I haven't gone yet but the old man has gotten 15 so far. in Fairbault Co and Winnebago Co.

my boys use a single shot new england firearms 243 and i use my 270 encore that i use to deer hunt with, does anybody use a 25-06?

No, have not tried a 25-06, but that is a fine round. You guys got me thinking of loading down my 260 rem. now. Awesome.:)

My friend uses a .204 and I use a .243. I shoot a Remington 700 ADL with a 3x9x40 that has see thru rings. I shoot Hornady 56 grain rounds and haven't had any trouble killing dogs out to 250 yards. A post like this really gets my blood pumping first thing in the morning, yote hunting is where it's really at...:D

You guys need to Google," Coyote contest St. Francis, Kansas" and check out 357 coyotes killed in 2 days, over 1037 spotted, largest dog was 44.6lbs. smallest was 15 or 18lbs. This was last years total. This years was last weekend and I have'nt heard the results yet. I think the 2 man team that won shot 18..

Heard about it just couldn't make it, maybe next year. I really don't call them, we run through the fields and shoot them with a shotgun or hi-power. This contest looks like fun though!

When talking about the proper coyote rifle no one, thus far, has talked about the damage to the pelt that some of these rifles make. But if you aren't going to sell the hide I guess it doesn't make much difference. A 22-250 or 243 with soft points is going to blow a pretty big hole in a coyote.

I think a 223 is probably about a good a choice as any. Shells are readily available and can be bought fairly cheap. You also have available some loads with full metal jackets that will minimize pelt damage. I know some like a 17 Remington and aim for the rib cage. The small 17 cal. bullet enters and then blows up with no exit hole.

If this rifle is going to be used for predator hunting and maybe a prairie dog or two then the 223 would be tough to beat. Almost all manufactures make a 223 and ammo is easy to find.

Most of the coyotes that our group shoots are shot with shotguns, we only use hi-powers when the coyotes run across wheat fields since we don't drive on wheat

Here in East Central Wisconsin, my friends and I shoot 223's and 22-250's.
As a side note we hunt with hounds. My friends are really into hounds so sometimes it is more about running the dogs then it is about shooting the coyote. Does anyone else hunt with hounds?

Lab man, do you guys hunt with Greyhounds? We don't but there is a bunch out of Larned Ks that does. We run through creeks and fields and then use Marine Band Radios to communicate as there is way to much skip on the ol' CB nowadays! There is nothing better to get the blood pumping and the adrenaline flowing then setting there watching a low spot in complete silence and the radio cracks with "HE'S GOING NORTH". LOL, I got goose bumps just typing that.....:D

Hounds

We run July and Running Walkers, we hunt the kettle Moraine area here in Wisconsin where there is a lot of woods, and we can not use sight hounds...
these hounds would be the same you use for coon hunting...
