Great topic.
I think it varies greatly depending on weather. If the weather is warm(70 they stay in feed areas all day and night. (standing corn, milo) If weather is highs of 50 lows of 25 they roost in grass (crp), feed through out the day and return to roost in grass at night. If the weather is nasty they stay in the best cover as much as possible (cat tails) The best cover to me is wetlands. Corn or Milo field with grass around cattails. Nothing better.
I hunt Nebraska 15 to 20 times a year and shoot almost all the roosters before 9:00 am. Very few have grain in their gullets. I hunt South Dakota at least once per year for 3 days minimum. Can't hunt until 10:00 am in South Dakota and the vast majority of roosters have grain in their gullets.
That tells me most pheasants head to grain between 8:00 am and 10:00 am.
