What a difference a year makes

Figured it was about the time of day you would be along.

Need to go see your Aunt and pick up some potting soil. Lots of trees that need to go to pots, plus I picked up some Concordia Oaks a week ago at Concordia, MO. The bur oak at ranch headquarters is going to produce its first really good crop this year. Came from an acorn from a big bur oak by the library at K-State. It is eleven years old now and gets plenty of TLC. It is twenty-two feet tall and a fine specimen. It and a sawtooth in the yard was loaded last year, but a very late hard freeze did them in. I have a lot of trees to raise, bur oak, sawtooth oak, persimmon, Bebbs oak, Allegheny Chickapin, Drawf chickapin oak, pear. So much to do and so little time and now I am down in the back.:(

I planted bur oaks and sawtooths in a checkerboard pattern at the farm this spring. They are doing pretty well at the moment. I also planted some persimmon trees in the tree tubes so they get a chance to grow before they get browsed on. Those tubes really work. The persimmons look great and they really shot up.

I was going to order some chinkapin oaks last year, but they were out by the time I went to place my order. I have room for plenty more trees, so I might try some of those in a few years.

First I want to get some better bird cover growing though. And some pear trees would be nice too...

I will have to get a current pic of my bur oak, but here it is at 8 years.

It has been growing about 15-18 inches a year, except last year with that late hard freeze which totally blackened and killed the new growth. In time it grew past the dead wood, but only put on about six inch shoots.

I am anxious to see how the Concordia oaks perform here in this climate. If I get them going you will be welcome to a couple. If all goes well I should have a bunch of acorns from the bur oak you would be welcome to. I think it has some really good genes.

Here is the bur oak today. It is twenty-two feet tall and about twenty-six inches in circumference.

The sawtooth in the background was a seedling(four foot tall whip) in 2000.

Dang, Maynard, trim that thing up from the ground a ways! :D

My wife always gives me a hard time because I cut anything I can reach with the loppers. Can't stand getting whacked in the face with tree branches when I mow... I always figure the tree will make more leaves where they are supposed to be... UP HIGH! So far so good.

What's a concordia oak's claim to fame?
