What a change

When I was in highschool my buddies and I hunted around Seneca. Used to be that there was some nice cover there and a fair amount of birds. The starlight motel would be pretty full of hunters opening weekend.

Went up and hunted a couple of spots today and looked around some. Mostly overgrazed pastures and ditch to ditch corn and beans with little to no cover. Sad to see how bad that area is now compared to what it used to be.

Obie got his first taste (smell) of a couple of pheasants though. He pinned a hen at about 200 yrds. Saw the whole thing go down and watched the bird flush from about 100 yrds away. overall the area looked like a waste land. Only reason a bird was found was he covered so much ground. Lot of work for one bird but he may have found one of the few pheasants left around there.

Staying home tomorrow but will be back out everyday until the 5th of jan after that. Going to go further west later in the week to chase some more mixed bag. May try around marysville/Washington area.

I feel your pain. The last good bird contact day I had there was about ten years ago. Used to be a great couple hour trip for me on some good ground. Have seen it deteriorate greatly in the last 6-7 years. Haven't hunted up there in three years or so. Really too bad. I don't mind working for my birds. But me and the dog can walk a half section of waist high grass across the street from my house and not see anything. :) The threat of seeing something has to be there. I also used to have fair luck around Sabetha, but I was up there this fall visiting relatives and the ground looks pretty barren.
