What a bummer

Looks like mr Obie may be out for the rest of the season with a cut ear. What's sucks is its not like a big cut. More like a scrape but gosh does it ever bleed. His head and left shoulder just covered in blood.

Guess it will be just me and milo from here on out. Kind of like the old days. Should have kept bob around but a guy talked me out of him and he's in New Mexico hunting scalies on some big ranch. May have to make a trip down there some time.

Had one split an ear about two inches one time. Vet wouldn't stitch it because he thought the dog would shake them out. Had me use super glue. Bled a lot but healed quickly. I bet he'll be ready by next Saturday.

Seconded on the suoerglue

My gsp had a tear in the ear, not all the way thru. I superglued it in the field, and got her to the vet later. Vet said she'd probably just scratch / shake out stitches, and said the glue was fine unless she messed with it. She hunted the next week. Only problem was she was mad I wouldnt let her hunt the rest of the day that I glued it.

It's not a deep enough to staple or stitch. That's what weird about it. I'm gonna bring him in tonight for a bath and take a better look at it.

Superglue is a great idea! May have to try that.

Duckn66,

You're absolutely right! Minor cuts on the ear make for a bloody mess. The closer to the tip, the worse it is. The key to healing an ear is to keep the dog from shaking his head. Since that's impossible, it takes forever to heal. Anything you do, such as super glue, etc. just makes the end of the ear weigh more so it flaps around even harder. I went though such a rash of ear injuries a few years ago I did something about it.

I spoke to my vet and he said if I could find a way to keep the ears from flapping around for just a few days that it would heal much faster. I got on the Internet and found something called a "Stockinette". It's just a light bandage that will fit over the dog's head and back to his collar. Keeping his ears from flapping about. I need to use tape to keep the stocking from rolling back toward the collar. It's a pain for 3-5 days, but it really works. See picture here (not one my dogs):

Unfortunately it's only available in 25 yard rolls. Also, I didn't know what size. As a result I purchased 25 yard rolls in 3" & 4" sizes as it stretches significantly. At the time it was hard to find and ridiculously expensive. I believe it has come down significantly in price now and is available in smaller amounts.

At the time, I showed it to my vet and traded him half the rolls in exchange for teaching me to suture. Naturally, since I purchased this stuff I've had need for it only twice! (guess that's a good thing!). All in all it's worked out well as it seems I have to suture at least one of my dogs a couple of times a season.

Sorry to be so long winded. The bottom line is that if you'd like me to cut off a couple of yards of this stuff and stick it in an envelope, send me a PM and I'd be happy to help. I'm thinking we're probably not all that far apart.

Best of luck,

Point!

It just looks like a child's small stocking cap with the top cut out. But it looks like it would work.

One of the best posts I've seen on any board! Probably solved the same problem for me. Furnishings on my dogs ear clotted and made a mess after a small cut. It took 10 days or better to heal and hardly left a scar. Will use this in the future. The cut came from a briar or one of your thorny Locust I think.
THANKYOU

Great post!

I gave him a 1 hour bath last night to get all the blood off him. Destroyed the tub! Looked like someone had gotten cut up. He enjoyed the bath enjoyed the nigh inside too. It's stopped bleeding so it a waiting game now I suppose.

If you put some superglue on after a bit, then a section of woman's nylons, or a portion of an ice-skating sock when you go out, it will be fine.

It's like when one of your kids smacks their head on something: scares the heck out of you, but mostly it is nothing.

It's gonna be fine.

He's fine and it's stopped bleeding. He's out relaxing in his heated dog house now. He's a pretty special little dude. Think I'll let him sit for a week and before we hunt next weekend superglue it. Supposed to head out to the russell area next weekend but if he can't go then I'll probably skip the trip and hunt the late zone duck opener for the last week here and do some local quail hunting with the older pointer.
