Week #2 How did it go?

I am booked for 1:00 on Wednesday afternoon at Colorado Wingsport.

Looking forward to getting the boys on some birds, especially the youngster.

I will take some pics. It is very nice that they are so close. I could actually get the boys out for a hunt and still get to work at a decent hour too. This could be trouble. ;-)

Thank's but I feel kind of bad....I think they were the last two in Phillip's county.
I am going to preserve it this year.

I enjoy chukar hunting and Ankeny Ranch outside of Greeley and Walt is a good guy.

Thanks,
Russ

I went out east chasing quail on Saturday, trying to put my 5 month old GSP pup on some easy birds to point. No quail found, but my lab put me on a couple roosters in a place that I was not expecting, actual public land owned by the Colorado department of wildlife mismanagement. The first one was dead before he hit the ground with cheap Estate 7.5's that I brought for quail. So I switched to Fiocchi 5's when I realized we were pheasant hunting. Go figure, but the second one shot with the expensive 5's went down wounded in heavy cover and the dog lost it. I guess the key to finding birds this year is go to the wrong place at the wrong time and pretend like you're hunting for something else.

Just a reminder because I'm seeing a lot more talk about quail this year with pheasants numbers down. Please, pretty please don't shoot the coveys with less than 10-12 birds. It's really easy to wipe out the coveys with everyone focusing all those good bird dogs on quail rather than pheasant, particularly on public land where half the hunters will shoot every blue jay within range.

I think preserving it maybe the way to go this season. I don't even want to talk about our trip to South Dakota.

Put it this way, I have killed more roosters in Colorado than I ddi in SD:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Greg

Sorry about your trip to South Dakota from the sounds of it. I know you were stoked for it!!

Greg,
Sorry you didn't find the birds in SD but there are some good areas. I trying to set a date next month to go back for the second 5 days, there are certainly a lot more there than CO has to offer this year.

Awesome, Let us know how the cover is and how the hunt was.

Quail coveys and Estate shells....

DPF,

Great post and a very good point about not shooting coveys below 1/2 of their preseason #'s....:10sign:

If we practice good quail hunting ethics....the coveys will be there year after year:)

Regarding Estate brand shells....I shoot their 20ga. 1oz loads of #7-1/2 shot.
I buy several cases at my local store and have very good results. I use them on wild phez and quail and also on preserve birds. They pattern very well in my guns and I love the price of $6.75 per box:)

Happy Thanksgiving to all...

Where do you buy those at? I need some for hunting the preserve on Friday :).

I live in Kentucky.....and purchase them at Sportsman's Wharehouse or my local gun shops.

You may be able to look at the Estate web site and see what vendors in your area sell them.

Good luck!

Oh nice. I will go check out Sportsman's Warehouse on my way home. I usually only buy Golden Pheasant or Prairie Storms. Thanks for the heads up.
