Week #2 How did it go?

Took the boys out to the Ft Morgan / Brush area because I needed to get back to the homestead before 2:00 today.

Worked a corn field, almost back to the truck and a rooster popped up. Too far out of range. That was it for the day. Just glad to have seen a bird that was shootable. Worked another field in the area and came up with nothing. Drove 71 up to Weld County - it was pretty bleak up there.

Hopefully someone had better luck than us!

The dog and I hunted around Brush too.. Kicked up three hens, one covey of quail, and three nice whitetail sheds..... Managed to put two quail on the ground... Shooting #9's so pheasants weren't on the list today.

Glad you got into something besides grouse, those poor birds needed a break lol. Nice bobs, imho nothing beats them on the table. Did you happen to be near Prewitt.?

Close by Prewitt.. Almost stopped in to see if there were any birds hiding in there. You're right figured I had better give them mountain chickens a rest until nest year.
Gentleman Bob makes great table fair. I always manage to bring a few to the table every year...

Uplandhunter67 ,
That is one fine looking dog, looks like my old Ozzy Dog ( boy, I miss him something terrible)

Hunted about six hours yesterday between Stratton and Joe's. dogs flushed one rooster that didn't get up high enough above my dogs for a shot, and one hen. That is all I saw. Pretty slow...I didn't hear a shot all day.

I headed out to Brush today as well. Saw one hen running about 60 yards out at the end of a windbreak. Flushed one bunny but no shot was presented. Pretty bad cover throughout. Anyone have other close area with better cover? Are the grass fields to the north of Brush any good or are they bare as well?

Went out to Banner Lakes near Hudson yesterday afternoon, more to see what was there and let the dog get some exercise. Did not find any birds but a couple guys said they thought there were a few pheasant out there yet. They said opening weekend was nuts. Looked like maybe a better place for later in the season.

Anyone have any good ares for scaled quail? My son is coming out for Christmas and I thought I would get out with him to try to find some. I am new to CO and
and know nothing about those birds. Any assistance is appreciated.

A friend of mine had gone hunting this weekend near Haxtun and sent back a pic of his dog with three roosters! He had to confess that he had hunted all day Sat and Sunday morning with no luck, and stopped off at Laybourn's Hunt Club in Cope so that his pup could find some birds.

I may be "preserving" it myself soon. I felt bad for our pup, Blitz, he worked hard last weekend and yesterday, without finding a darn thing. A preserve hunt for him would be a good morale booster for us both.

I think preserving it maybe the way to go this season. I don't even want to talk about our trip to South Dakota.

Put it this way, I have killed more roosters in Colorado than I ddi in SD:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Another canned hunt option

Another preserve option is www.coloradowingsport.com. Jason is a good friend of mine and is just outside the Thornton city limits so it is very close. Has good cover and good birds. Can do guided or non-guided and also has a membership program. Club house is almost finished and is really nice as well.

We headed out Saturday morning into Sedgwick County. It was really warm and dry for the dogs. We hit a few fields early in the AM only to kick up a few hens. The day dragged on and we were not seeing any roosters. Around 3pm we came up over a hill and seen several birds crossing the road from a wheat field into a corn field, all private property. We stopped and talked to the land owner and he allowed us to hunt it. We ended up getting two roosters out of there. We should have gotten four. But they flushed wild and we had two of our sons with us and we were just allowing them to shoot at one. If it wasn't for the farmer letting us hunt his property it would have been a rough day. The birds we did get had long spurs. We are not seeing any young birds and they run like it is late season already. I will give it another go after Thanksgiving. Than off to Kansas the following week.

I have already been in contact with Jason this morning.
The property is 20 min from my house. Woohoo!

Don't get me wrong, I love me some wild birds and there is nothing like a wild flush but $80.00 in gas to get to and from the hunting grounds, another $40.00 driving around, the 6 hours of seat time and the conditions we have out there the preserve option is not a bad idea. Especially with young pups. I can't tell you how far behind my lab was on ducks and geese after a poor season last year. Nice to be able to show them the good time that can be had chasing birds on a preserve so when things get better out east they are on there game.

Hi all,
Went to Holyoke the 15th-17th....boy it is rough there...the emergency haying and dry weather did not leave much for cover....dry and hot.....60 deg.

My dog (bless his heart) gave it his all, we found a field that nobody was hunting...I was not sure if I was a pheasant I would be in it either....first day, busted 6 hen's....skipped it for a day...went back the last day and busted 7 more hens and a rooster....got him.

The other rooster I got was at the end of a ditch when he found out he had nowhere to go but up.

On another note......I would like to try quail hunting....any suggestion's for areas to possibly try?
Thanks.
