JUST THOUGHT IT WOULDN'T HURT TO ASK. NOT REALLY LOOKING TO GET BASHED ON THE FORUM. WAS WONDERING IF ANY LANDOWNERS NORTH EAST OF ABERDEEN AREA WOULD BE WILLING TO ALLOW ACCESS TO SOME WATERFOWL HUNTING TO OUR GROUP OF 8? NOT LOOKING TO HUNT PHEASANT WE WILL DO THAT ON PUBLIC LAND. THE LAST TIME WE WERE OUT SD. IT SEEMED ALL THE WATERFOWL WERE ON PRIVATE LAND AND COMING FROM PA IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSABLE TO SCOUT OR GET PERMISSION TO HUNT BEFORE HAND. WE DONT HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY 100.00 PER MAN PER DAY, BUT ARE WILLING TO PAY SOMETHING FOR ACCESS JUST FOR WATERFOWL HUNTING. iF ANY LANDOWNERS ARE INTERESTED PM ME. THANKS.

I am not clear on the rules in SD, but when I was out there I asked about waterfowl and they told me I needed a permit that I needed to send in for and draw. But, I could go down to the Lower Brule res and pass shoot for like 35 bucks. It could of been a little more but reasonable. I personally shot 3 specks and some Canada's and saw lots of snow's. Had fun, so it was worth it!! Maybe someone who lives there can help with the rules a bit more!! Good luck!!

That is correct a non resident waterfowl license is done by lottery in the late spring early summer. It can't be purchased over the counter and the cost is the same as a small game but instead of two 5 day periods it's one 10 day period.

There are lots of Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) in SD. Had a group go up 2nd week and hunted public WPAs with better success than we did pheasant hunting on private land. Download their hunting atlas app, helps out a ton. Looks to be quite a few spots east of Chamberlain.

I won't speak for that area, but around here it would not be a big problem to get permission. Guys that hunt with me get to waterfowl hunt and I asked a niehgbor last night and he said ok.

I pheasant hunted on these spots south of Chamberlain and they were packed full of ducks. Cover was great around 2 of the larger ponds but one of the smaller, 2 acres maybe, was bailed for hay. Most of the ducks would fly off when I walked near but would just circle back in. I didn't notice many geese though.

I have duck hunted as a non-resident and we planned out our first day to scout some known public areas and also stop and ask for private land. I would say that 75% of the places we asked for permission to duck hunt we got it. Geese was close to 100%, not a lot of love for the geese:). We were between Brookings and Huron and North of DeSmet.

Some days we would hunt on the production area until 10am then shoot a few pheasants before we left.

Good luck!

Was pheasant hunting two days ago in the Hecla area and saw a good number of ducks on public access. Pheasant numbers were pretty poor relative to past years but the waterfowl appeared plentiful.

Have a co-worker that hunts ducks in the Britton/Hecla area every year he draws a tag. They have a very high rate of success when asking to hunt on private. They also take quite a few ducks on public as well. A platt book that identifies the landowner by parcel is a big help.
