I feel as though I have been hunting blind my entire "hunting" life. at the age of 26 I now have been hunting phez in SD for the past 12 years or so, every now and then my fathers friends would bring a dog but for the most part we have been hunting without mans best beast. however we have been very fortunate to have great land in the family for hunting and usually do very well without. this year with bird numbers low, and a lot of the land we traditionally hunt sold:mad:, my hunting has consisted of public land close to home. but MAN what a difference having a dog makes! I have yet to come home empty handed....and I owe it all to my 1.5 yr old female vizsla. although she is over a year this is her fist official hunting season. she is doing phenomenal for her first year. I especially enjoy hunting a field after a group and still finding birds they missed ;) officially hooked on bird dogs and the satisfaction of watching them work that comes with it

sorry so long winded but felt like sharing...happy hunting all:cheers:

I enjoy hunting but the real joy is watching my dog and being proud of her. I love seeing the light come on in her head. I just don't go without her. Had a friend I had invited to go to NE one year that said to me as the magic day neared for departure, "We don't really need a dog to hunt pheasants, and besides we'll have to smell her all the way back home!" I replied to him, "You are the only optional part of the equation, as in my dog is going but you may not be going!" I never meant anything any more, in my life! He shut up but he doesn't go with me anymore. Congrats on your "arrival". It is a great thing to experience!

Welcome to the "club". Your next moment of enlightenment is when your dog has about 10 great points and the birds hold for you to flush, but there all hens and you don't fire a shot all day and go home thinking thats the best hunt of the year so far strictly because of dog work. Then you'll have a day where the dog work is poor for whatever reason, but you shoot your limit and spend the rest of the day bummed that things didn't click. Good luck to you and your dog and enjoy. By the way go ahead and let the wife know now about the second dog because there will be a second dog.
