Wake up early and head up high

Yep, its that time of year everybody! MOUNTAIN QUAIL SEASON IS UPON US!!! Saw very few birds last year and didn't shoot any but any excuse to hit the high country is a good one in my books. I didn't have much time to scout this year, only got up once and only saw one family group but it was a big one. We'll be up in our traditional camp hunting our normal areas and hopefully having quail for dinner saturday night.

I forgot to take any pics. Moved 3 coveys yesterday and one today. More quail this year than last but the numbers are still off in the high country. Rifle deer season starts next weekend in my mountains so I'll either have to give the dogs the weekend off or head north. I scouted an area 5 hrs north that was loaded with mtn quail so maybe I'll take a little trip.

Saw a big set of sow tracks with 2 sets of cub tracks in tow and flushed a nice covey in this spot. Sorry for the poor picture.

And here are the birds (gorged on pine nuts) taken, all 3 juvies just coloring up but still considerably bigger than an adult valley quail.

Sounds like you had a nice time out there Rob. Does Calif. have grizzlies? If so, have you ever seen one while bird hunting?

Nick

Unfortunately Nick, the only grizzly you will see in California now lives on our state flag.:( The last one was killed in 1922. They disappeared right along with the gteat Tulare Lake. If you ever have a chance read a little about tulare lake, it may be the biggest environmental tragedy in America's history.

Robert,

What do the taste like, on pine nuts? I know they are bigger than Valley and Gambles. I have know Idea what they taste like.:)

Not much different Scott. I'm thinking I'll split them, saute in butter and serve them with a gooseberry glaze and some toasted pine nuts all harvested from the same area.

Nice going Robert. I would have gone but unfortunately the American Fire burned up every one of the spots I've hunted in the past. The good news is that when the brush comes back it will be great for a few years.

Yeah Cal, I think a lot of people were displaced from their happy hunting grounds by fires this year.:( I'm not going up this weekend because deer rifle season started today in my mountains but I'll get back up before the general quail opener.

John. Lmao! Yes sir.
