Ah -- took the 6 mo old Brittany out on birds for the first time this weekend back in SE KS. Uncle has 2 Britts and been raising bird dogs all his life so he was a good mentor when I would overthink things. Bottom line is these dogs will train me.
First off -- little did we know there is a bird farm about 5 miles west of the family farm, got in touch with the guy and told him we wanted Chukar. $100 for 18 birds wasn't bad at all....considering we have the ground/acreage and it's legal to hunt/kill chukar in KS all year long. I've also been told they put out a bigger scent cone than quail....definitely were good eating (kids thought they got chicken strips last night...ha).
Pup was in pro/season mode. Ended up 9 for 10 on pointing birds, towards the end it was little warm and he found a big water draw to lay so I docked him on the last bird but still was very impressive. He was showing off after I'd knock down the bird and do a victory lap -- was little concerned but I gotta feel like he needs to be rewarded a little. We'll see if it comes to haunt me. I was really happy to see him bold up in the thick cover and jump in pond after one flushed into tree and we had to shoot down into water. That and not being shy around the guns and noise.
Great time -- we'll do it again this weekend with the kids and see what they think. I'm hoping to get him on 50-75 birds before November gets here..some pics nice time!
