The Three Trails Pointing Dog Club in Kansas City would like to hold a seminar next year on first aid in the field for gun dogs. We would would like to have a local Vet go through what first aid bird hunters should carry in their hunting vest, what we should have in the first aid kit in our truck and answer general questions on administering first aid in the field. We would like to find a Vet that hunts and works with bird dogs frequently, if possible.

If anyone has any specific recommendations on a Vet in the area that might be willing to work with us, please let me know or PM me. Thanks.

My unsolicited two cents, all you need for the field is a way to stop bleeding. Same for people. Nobody ever dies from a broken bone or sunburn. Most first aid kits are overgrown snoopy band aids. Gauze tape blood stop powder tourniquet will save lives.

A lot of things can happen in the field. Soft tissue injuries, barbed wire, porcupines etc. A lot of products available too. Some you need and some you don't. We all have opinions but as a club we are trying to provide information and/or training that benefits hunters and ultimately the dogs.

Roger that, of course it’s a good thing. I’m a lil rankled because I’ve been looking at first aid kits for the farm and they are a bit of a joke. I need legit blood stop gear and every first aid kit sold in stores amounts to boo boo band aids.

I agree. I don't use a store bought "kit". I put stuff together based on what I think are priorities and my own capabilities. Gauze, blood stop and vet wrap go a long way but I wouldn't mind getting more guidance from someone who knows what they're doing.

Mosby, this is a great idea in my opinion. I’ve spent a lot of time putting together med kits for the dog and myself. My vet and I have had some pretty detailed conversations on kits and care while afield. She has outfitted me with items and medications.
