Updates for Weather and Birds in Aberdeen Area

Heading to Aberdeen area Oct 24th after hunting around Watertown the last 11 years. Any updates on bird counts, sitings or even weather?

I have heard about the wind...

I think the pheasant count per square mile is at about 3.5, so not great, but there are some birds still around. I live in Aberdeen, but we went with a group to Miller for opening day. We ended up with 19 out of a possible 21, we could have gotten our limit, but still a little rusty. All in all it was a great day, the weather was great, and it is just nice to get out in nature.

Where did you hunt around Miller? We hunt David Simon's land North and East of Miller about 10 miles. This summer, there sure seemed to be a lot of big roosters along the road out to the campground. I am hoping for good hunting. This year we only have 3 guys and 1 dog, so the lack of cover might be just what we need.

I forget the guys last name, but his first name is George. We were over by the golf course on the north end of St Lawrence for most of the day.

Got back yesterday from hunting in the Aberdeen area. We were able to limit out with our group of 14 hunters for three days. Fun trip, nice weather and met some great people.

Aberdeen Hunt

I just finished 3 days of pheasant hunting around Aberdeen. I run an English Setter (4 year old) and lab (3 year old). Both very good hunters. I've hunted for over 30 years myself. I also visited with other hunters in the area who made the trip to Aberdeen. Well...several hundred $ and sore feet later we shot the only rooster we saw. VERY disappointed in Aberdeen. If you're going to Aberdeen to hunt (non-preserve) areas; don't waste your time.

It hasn't been as good as previous years. I was out at our family gravel pit by Frederick last Sunday and we saw 6 roosters and got 1, they were all very long shots. In previous years 6 of us could walk that 1/2 square mile and get many birds. If we didn't get our limit in the big pit we would walk over to the little ones on the other side of the road and finish up. They had a good winter this year, otherwise there would be hardly anything.

Aberdeen

Just got back from that area and had 5 days of great hunting. Hunted some private land with friends and limited out every day. Lots of birds located in grass and cattails especially, 25-100+ birds coming out of the cattails. We saw 75% or more hens than roosters which is good for the factory if they survive the winter. All the fields had been hit hard the first week and the birds were all wild. That area seems to have had better crops than some other areas and better cover.

We were out 4 days over opener. 3 guys and 30 birds. Hunted probably 2/3 public and 1/3 private.....probably shot about 50% of total on each. More hunting pressure then we have experienced the past few years. Certainly could have limited but for less than spectacular shooting. Hard to find good cover, as much was cut but when we did...it produced.

we will be finishing up today in the general Aberdeen area, good number of birds, easy limits, even some good cover in the ditches too ;)....for a down year, i am impressed....should be hunting in a short sleeve shirt by noon or 1 p.m. today, beautiful weather. Mobridge/Selby area was a disappointment.

Thanx for the report...were you hunting private or public. Don't forget to put on sunscreen!
