My brother , the deer hunter , was walking in the river bottom and spotted a rooster tail sticking out of the grass. He grabbed the tail and the bird didn't move. Bird was crushed by a tree that fell over.

Ive seen pheasant tails sticking out from under object quite a few times, although i think all of mine were due to animals dragging them under there. Youd be surprised how big of a bird mice can drag around! Never seen one killed by a log before, thats one unlucky bird

In Iowa we were traveling a gravel road. I see a pheasant hanging from the tree. We stopped and I get out to investigate. I find two more roosters in the ditch. Baffled and confused trying to make sense of it. I I turn the birds over and find breast eaten out. The eyes were then pecked out. My conclusion was that was an eagle perch they feast on the pheasants from.

Neighbor found the same under telephone pole. Except they was rabbits.

They can easily due a number on the prey in the area. That is for sure. Unfortunate for us pheasants hunters lol

If the tree fell on it, how could he pull it out?
Maybe wounded and died trying to hide.

Maybe it is the picture, I don't see that small of stump falling over and hitting it. Either predator or wounded are my bets
