A friend's father passed away and she gave me a box with some of her dad's hunting stuff - a gun cleaning kit and several boxes of old shells. The cleaning kit is great with a three-piece rod made of hard maple wood (according to the box). One box of shells has $2.95 written on it, another $2.79, which give away its age. Shells are three boxes of 12 ga. which is my gauge. Two are Western Xpert no. 7 1/2s, one 1 1/8 oz., one 1 1/4 oz., and one Remington Shur Shot no. 6s, 1 1/8 oz. Also in the goodie box is a J.C. Higgins shell vest.

I really like the cleaning kit with its wood ramrod. My kit has an aluminum ramrod which leaves shavings if it slides against one of the sharp edges at the action end of the barrel. Last thing you want in that area is metal shavings.

I remember all of those. Is the Xpert 1 1/4 a higher velocity than the 1 1/8?

Just took them home at lunch. Will check them tonight and update this post tomorrow.

I doubt in those days the heavier loads were higher velocity. They used denser, slower powders to get the heavy loads out the barrel. Velocity was a term used far less in those days.

When I was in HS I lived about 35 miles from East Alton where the Win/Western ammo was manufactured and was able to obtain 3 1/4 dram, 1 1/4 loads. That translated to about 1220 ft per sec. I found them less expensive and just as effective as the 3 3/4 dram loads listed at 1330. Actually I used Federal shells as much as Rem and Win as they could usually be obtained for .50-.75 cents less.

No velocity is stated on either box; however, both are rated 3 1/4 drams. I suppose that means the 1 1/8 oz. load would be slightly faster due to lighter weight.

In looking again I see a price of $2.79 on one of the Western boxes.
