Im from Texas, and my dad and I hunted Kansas for the first time this year. We hunted all over Sherman, Wallace, and Thomas counties the week of November 12-16. We hunted on Wednesday and Thursday of that week, all on WIHAs, and the only other hunters we saw (2 separate groups) were at the hotel and restaurants. They were all out of staters too. While hunting, we never saw anyone else hunting. It was like we had the whole place to ourselves! Im sure this was due to hunting during the week, but thats the exact reason we went when we did.
The locals we talked to at convenience stores, restaurants, and at the hotel were all friendly and wanted to know where we were from and how the hunting was going. There was a Kansas resident that was also staying at our motel that was building a new barn on a local farmers place. He gave me the farmers phone number, and the farmer told us we were welcome to hunt his private land.
I have nothing but positive things to say about Kansas, the residents of the state, and our experience while there.
We did get a few birds, but we dang sure put in the miles to get them. I look at it like this, its called hunting not killing, and theres a reason for that.
Im sure Kansas, like any other state, has its fair share of jack wagons, but we sure didnt run into any.
I say go, hunt, meet the locals, be a gentleman, and enjoy the countless acres of opportunity that exist in Kansas. Enjoy time with your family and make memories to last a lifetime.
