Myself and a friend are coming out to the Waubay area in 2 weeks to pheasant hunt. Does anyone know how the hunting has been? If so could you please respond. Are the numbers of birds good and is there plenty of areas to hunt. Thanks for any info I can get.

I'm sorry I can't give any information on the Waubay area. I'm 60 miles west in Aberdeen. But I can tell you that pheasant hunting in general has been tough this year. In fact it seems that the past 3 weeks have been really tough. I hunt all public land and over the past 3 weeks I'm only averaging 1 bird per hunt. And that's with 2 pretty good dogs. The crops are getting out and the weather has turned colder so maybe that will help. One of the major problems is still the water. It hasn't froze hard enough to get out on the ice in the sloughs and that's where the birds are. I went through the ice up to my knees yesterday trying to get to some birds that were flushing wild.

Good luck, hope you find a bunch.

Not many birds from Waubay East. The further West you go from Waubay, the better. Lots of WIA land to hunt, but much if it is so large that you just can't cover it. Look for small grass/weed/sloughs near corn and hunt them. Get West at least as far as Bristol, hunt North and South from there.

Plenty of birds, and lots of work to find them. Lots of fun too.

Im in Waubay now
Been here for 2 days and dont have any birds in the vest yet. Lots of corn in yet. The cold days/nights will make it easier to get in and around the cattails for me and the dogs. I may head W towards Aberdeen tomorrow although look at the SD atlas it doesnt look like theres much public land that way. The snow last night should help a bit too. In 2 weeks the corn should be off and the birds should be bunched up more

In 2 days Ive only seen 2 other trucks parked in public areas. Just no one else around
