Well, I just returned home from my annual 10-day eastern South Dakota road trip. The pheasant numbers in Clark and Spink counties were defenitly down form previous years IMO. I would venture to say 60-70% less birds than we normally see, however, the weather was not favorable either. I ended up getting 20 birds over nine days of hunting and my partner finished with 18. We blew several good opportunies or else could have shot a limit of birds each day. The hunting was difficult however, and we pretty much walked from 10 am to 5 pm each day. Did hunt some private land that normally produces fast limits but I would have to say that our best hunting was west of Redfield on public ground. Either way, even a bad year in South Dakota is good in my books and already cant wait until next fall. Now off to shooting some Idaho chukars.

I would agree on your estimate about pheasant numbers being down 60% or so. I found this to be true in the southeast area of South Dakota that I hunt. I was pleased with the quality of cover on the public areas I hunted though.
