traveling US/36 East and West

High Brass

Headed to Norton, Hill City area from central Illinois Saturday. I would like to avoid St. Louis and Kansas City if possible. Can a person make decent time on US/36 rather than I-70. US/36 should save us about 60 miles but can't decide how much time it will cost.
Thanks for the help
Bob

Yes, you can do 75 mph on 36. You will have all the towns to slow down in and the occasional car to pass, but I enjoy 36. 70 is boring, and you will see some WIHA areas along the road that are fun to stop at now and then.

You can make good timing on 36. And lots of walk in hunting areas not far off. Good luck

Hwy 18

18 is my favorite Highway in the world. From Salina to Codell I met 3 cars Thursday night (probably a 100 miles). Saw more deer than cars.

That is a great point. With the rut, you have to be very careful on 36 and 18. Drove 18 last weekend and saw at least 20 collision stains in the road.

I know that no road is "deer proof" but at least on I-70 there is more room on the side of the highway to spot potential problems. I do enjoy the occasional scenic route but for the most part I stick with I-70. A few years ago I was coming back to KC after a hunt and was driving in a blizzard/ice storm and I stopped in Abilene to top off on fuel. 70 had just been shut down at Salina and when I tried to get back on 70E an officer had 70 blocked due to a 4 car 2 diesel pile-up at Junction City. I got detoured up to 18 and then came into Junction City from the west and picked up I-70 again. It was drifting like crazy but I made it through. This is another reason that I like to stick with the main highway, if you have trouble your chances of getting help are greatly increased. If I would have gotten stuck on 18, my chances of getting help were slim to none. Granted when you make the trip the weather is hopefully good so you don't run into any problems like that. Sorry for the rambling on and I don't mean to hijack the thread, it's just that highway 18 and I have a not so fond history......;)

I-70 in Kansas City

It is easy to get through Kansas City on I-70 (670 bypass) so long as it is not the 5 o'clock rush hour. St. Louis can't be that bad either so long as it's not rush hour. I've zipped at full speed on I-70 through St. Louis and KC many times. If you want to make good time, I-70 IMO is the way to go. If you don't mind a lower speed limit and a lot of slowing to pass through the many towns on US 36, take it. Also, any road construction on 36 will likely entail a closed lane and coming to a complete stop for a flagman.

I am coming from springfield mo , would it be any quicker to get on 10 highway and cut over through lawrence to hop on I 70. we will be going through at 5 in the morning. are there any good reststops along I70 to let dogs run?

I435 to I70 is faster than going through Lawrence imo. I live 1 mile off of K10 and I always take either 435 or K7 north to hit 70 west.

Go to MapQuest for the best route. Not sure you want to dogs loose along an interstate or any highway.
