Hi All,
I am working with my two year old weim and I was told to get a shocking collar for him. I like the idea I am only worried he may be to old at two years? Any thoughts?

Thanks
Andy

Andy a shock collar can be used at every age it just depends on how you want to use it and at his age you need to be seriouse about the things you are correcting he has had these habits for a long time and you are going to need to pick your battles as to wich ones you want to change and always correct them when he does it not just once in a while good luck hopefully it will work for you

Usually it don't take much shock to get a dogs attention. The one thing is let the dog wear it 24/7 for a few days. Then make very sure the dog know the commands you are giving it. If it refuses to comply give the command again but with the e-collar on its lowest setting that the dogs feels give it a nick. Get a collar that has nick and constant. The nicks are for like 1/20 of a second, which lets them know "you did that wrong and I am not going to stand for it." After a few of them and they usually learn to do things the way you want it done. But use it sparingly, and I don't like the idea of doing it when birds are involved. They may quit hunting for you........Bob

I don't think there is "Too Old" of an age to start using an e-collar. I would be more concerned about a dog being too young. However, you must know how and when to use an e-collar. An e-collar is not a subsitute for proper training. The dog must be taught various commands first and then the collar only re-enforces the commands when the dogs is not properly executing them. Also remember that if the dog vocalizes when you stimulate them with the e-collar you have it too hot. An e-collar can be a very effective tool or it can ruin a dog. Make sure you're using it properly and good luck.

Shock Collar Cautions

I would get a collar that has three buttons: vibrate, nick, and current (shocks so long as the button is pushed) and adjustable current strength. Many people in this forum have spoken well of Dogtra brand which I also recommend.

Start with making sure you've trained your dog and it knows all of your few, one word (preferably one syllable) commands. Then and only then use the collar for reinforcement or solidifying obedience. Always issue a clear command first and give the dog a chance to obey. Only then start with vibration as a reminder and warning. Then go to nick at a low setting next -- just enough where you can see the dog react a bit, like with a small head movement. Be careful. You can make a dog scream with a shock collar and you never want to do that. Beware that some dogs are soft and will simply retreat if shocked, but most bird dogs handle it well. Good luck to you.

I started an 11-yo dog, a 9-yo dog, and a 4-yo dog on a shock collar last season. It worked very well. I agree w/ most of these guys in that it is more important how you use it than when you start using it. Best of luck to you.
