Things to see around Dubuque

I plan to visit the far NE corner of your fine state the first week of October for a conference. We're staying in some fancy resort w/ boring crap like golf planned for entertainment (sorry golfers, but I suck at your game so I don't like it:D).

Anyway, I have some spare time in the evenings and don't like sitting in a resort/hotel, nor do I care for hanging out w/ the "brass" of the corporation. I prefer to take to the backroads when I'm on trips like these, but I'm not at all familiar w/ the area.

Would you residents suggest I take a fishing pole or plan to hit the backroads in search of game and scenery. I enjoy both.

Thanks!

What resort are you staying at? I'm originally from DBQ and family still lives there? Oct. is a wonderful time of year there. Typically cool, crisp mornings and leaves changing colors.

Take your smokepole and pointing dog. There used to be ruffed grouse up there, as close to Kansas as you'll ever find them. Season opened in October, quite a bit of public land in Northeast Iowa, as compared to the rest of the state.

Ya know, if I can figure a way to take care of my dog during the day I might just do that. I'll see if the resort has any options. Thanks for the recommendation!

Can always wet a line or hunt for squirrels and grouse. Head north along the river for some opportunities. Also there are a few nature trails around DBQ worth walking/hiking. Casino gambling along with dog racing (simulcast that late in the year I believe). Plenty of deer in that neck of the woods but not much for phez.

Thank you guys a great deal for the responses. Just got the itenerary for my stay and it looks like I'm booked up more than I wanted to be (business on a business trip:confused::rolleyes::D All this time I thought it was the company's way of getting us away from our wives to have fun and relieve stress.

I've decided to try my hand at some Muskee. I've never done it before and the lodge/resort actually offers a pontoon boat and gear. I'd rather hunt, but that would require more time than I'll have so I'll settle for some fishing. However, if I end up w/ a bit of time on my hands in the evening, I may very well find some public land and go for a stroll. I can always pretend I have my gun and dog w/ me:)
