So I've been hunting far from home in multiple states the last few years. Small truck, one dog, not a lot of gear. I try to find out of the way places to hunt, and quietly, legally and cleanly, to camp. Never have seen an ugly sunset (or sunrise) on the prairie, and falling asleep before 8:30 with the light of the moon instead of neon slipping around curtains or the flickering of a TV is priceless. What's even better are night's like I experienced multiple times this year with the music of cackling roosters, a couple i swear were just outside the truck. How many here, that don't literally live out in pheasant country, realize that on calm nights roosters talk all night long? Knowing that they will be within walking distance in the morning is more reassuring then sleep disrupting.
Add to this the singing of coyotes, the creaking of an old rusty windmill (which was 1/2 mile to the south) and the occasional lullaby of migrating geese and I am reassured in my belief that something is lost when sleeping in town under a roof.
