The Gun Reports are coming in.....

I am writing to you from the front porch of the PCL. Absolutely a heavenly evening. The winds have laid down and you can hear everything. Got roosters on my right sounding off and watching my hunters work a milo patch to my left.

Just heard 2 volleys come from Cattail Haven in the last minute or so. Obviously if both camps are still hunting limits have not been reached yet.

I have been hearing gun reports all day. Before the hunt started the hunters thought birds "seemed" down. The colony that farms my ground seemed to think birds were up over last year.

ALERT! There goes two roosters cackling like crazy that have eluded my hunters pushing the milo patch. Education complete! I can only assume those are last years birds!

I look forward to hearing the stories when we convein at the lodge and watch the cubs games and Bargers games. Someone cried out "rooster!" and then one shot. Probably connected.

I'm here in Miner County and birds are definitely up from last year. By a long shot! Flushing real wild today and dogs are wiped out. Two days in the 70's ahead but looking forward to the hunts. Be safe and good luck everyone.

Cubbies Rule, it's been a lifetime, literally, but the curse of the goat is history. Listened to the game on Sirius while driving back to the Black Hills, screaming for my Cubbies like a little boy. Steve Goodman is dancing in his grave, Harry is tipping a Bud with Jack Brickhouse and Ernie Banks and all is good in the World tonight. Now I gotta watch it on dvr, glad I got no birds to deal with.

Didn't get any birds, my partners got two, but standing crops are everywhere and it's gonna get real good.

Father-in-law is hunting Miller (were I'll be Thursday ), they had a group of 20+ guys and got about 36 roosters. He said they were hard to find, but having good dogs saved em.

My brother and dad are hunting Mobridge. They got about 25 roosters for a party of about 15. He said they say about 40-50. Lots more were hens.

Looks like decent numbers if you (or your dog ) are willing to work for them.

Good luck everyone. RanchO great point about the dogs.... it's dangerous and that's why I typically avoid opening weekend. Go Cubs! Lifelong fan as well

Good news. The springer made a quick recovery and was out hunting yesterday and chasing roosters. Sounds like the group adjusted for weather and everyone did ok. About the same birds and opener. I would say birds maybe same as last year or maybe down a little attributed to the hot summer and wet april/may.

I have not seen this group harvest a 2nd year bird yet so that may be the "unaccounted" bird numbers not hitting our radar if indeed there are significant numbers of carryover roosters.

2nd group in at my place in south central SD. About same first day as opener group. Same loss ration and everything. Including losses coming close to limits but not including would appears birds down from last year. All corn is still in and we have a ton of wheat stubble with cover crops in the area. Weather has been fair and warm. Still too early to tell IMO.

Guys are seeing lots of birds, plenty of shooting and having lots of fun in the field.

did well on the pheasants, lost a few in the cattails, but flushed more this year than last year. The ducks were down this year compared to last year but we did good on sat and sun but the wind blew them off our ponds and we didn't have huntable numbers again until Wednesday. but another great year at camp. Hunted in North Central SD east of the Missouri on both Private and public lands
