The good the bad and the ugly

Our group of 3 hunted Phillips and Rooks counties this weekend. We saw lots of birds and had a great time. We didnt hurt the population though, 10 roosters and 5 quail. My shooting left a little to be desired but had my limit before noon on Saturday, got my first point, shot and retrieved bird from my youngest lab. So everthing else was gravy after that. Also had a double point with my two labs on two quail, I keep telling myself to leave the gun and take the camera. But its hard to do when you leave the damn camera at the house! Sunday morning met the nicest conservation officer and actually ended up bs'ing with him for an hour on the side of the road.
We saw more hunters then you could believe and didnt see a piece of WIHA that didnt have a group in it, leaving it or following us in. Had a couple groups actually drive around our truck and park in the field, hunting right behind us. Nobody got close enough to worry me but still a little unnerving.
The hotel we stayed at had a big group from Texas hunting private ground. They had a pile of birds which was great until we watched them breast them all out. I asked one guy about leaving something on to identify them and he said guess we're willing to risk it and walked off. Leaving the cleaning station a total mess with the trash can overflowing with cleaned birds, lazy a$$'s. They also left a bag full breasts laying on the sidewalk and never saw them again to tell them.

@labsnslabs - Glad you had a classic wknd yourself in spite of things! (I always had that problem bowhunting at times during the rut - could never make up my mind which one I wanted to pick up, the bow or the camera)...

Thx for making me feel a little better that I didn't miss all that much with the opening day circus, since I was unable to get out!

Ahh Texans, that kind of crap makes me almost ashamed to admit that I was born & raised one too. I've run across that same kind of lazy-@$$ hunters from a lot of places though...Did you at least take that bag of breasts home or give it to someone for good eats? What a waste!!! And the trash can mess I'm sure will leave yet one more good impression for our cause...

Love your UPH name!

With the cocky answer to your question, I think I'd have got some tag numbers and called the game warden.

To answer your guy's question no we didnt take it. We were worried about getting checked by a game warden and taking the blame. The hotel was four different buildings and they were all full so I didnt know what trucks they had or what building they were in. And we did end up getting checked that following morning and had to pull our birds out. We would have been busted for sure. We informed the game warden about the situation and told them they were hunting around Hays somewhere.

sort of sounds like they processed the pheasants- are you sure they broke any law- except possibly not taking all eddible meat

From KDWP website:
---------------------------------------------------------------
(g) Pheasants in an individual's possession for the purpose of transportation shall retain intact a foot, plumage, or some part by which the sex can be readily established.
(Authorized by and implementing K.S.A. 32-807 and K.S.A. 32-1002; effective, T-115-7-27-89, July 27, 1989; effective Sept. 18, 1989; amended June 1, 2001.)

Unless they were eating them at the hotel......

I wonder if this law has a grey area.

Maybe Troy will chime in?

My buddy and I will always breast out the birds and pack them on ice at the end of the day at the hotel we are staying at if we take an overnight trip.

I know if we are out for 2-4 days we dont want a nasty gamey foot tainting the meat. When is the line drawn for processing of the meat?

I have never been checked by a warden while hunting, but I have had my fishing license checked three or four times over the years. Nice guys, every one of 'em. I'm glad there is somebody out there checking bag limits, etc.. That way there will still be some roosters left whenever I get around to hunting them.

Well we asked the game warden the next morning when he was checking us. He said that he would have wrote all of them a ticket and then taken the meat as evidence. He was telling us that they actually have quite a problem with people trying to do that with hens.
