Headed West last weekend to visit the family and get a little bird hunting in. After lunch, Hoss (GSP) and I got out for a few hours. Expectations were low after hunting out there for the Opener. Walked a CRP field for 30 minutes that a mouse couldn't hide in and while heading back to the truck I noticed a nice patch of weeds up on the hill bordering some corn. Got to it, Hoss locked up and all hell broke loose. Missed the first rooster, but dropped the second and I stood there empty as a dozen roosters flew away. Marked them down and headed that way. Hoss pointed two hens then a rooster that I dropped a leg on and he flew 500 yards before folding up. Headed that way and found him laying on the edge of some winter wheat. Headed back to the house and hit a tailwater pitt on the way. Walked up and Hoss locked up a good distance away and again all hell broke loose. Winged the first bird and he went down in the pitt next to us and folded the next one (4th bird) cleanly. Headed to the other pitt and hunted dead for quite some time without finding the bird. Very pleased to see some birds and man was it nice to see Hoss being able to smell out there again. Cut the birds in chunks, put them in Italian dressing for a day, rolled and fried them up for supper one night for the family. They were a big hit!

Drove right by the drive and didn't pick me up:) Left a dozen poor roosters out there to dry up in the wind! Nice hunt! Glad there are some left in the great southwest!

Those few roosters that are left are really going to be living the high life come spring though. Hope they don't get wore out!
